remove leaves on branches to speed up ripening

My small fig bush, in Pittsburgh, produces figs each year that do not ripen before a killing frost. I have heard of removing lower leaves on each branch or 'shoot' which would cause the fruit on that particular branch to ripen earlier. Not sure of just how many leaves to remove.

Has anyone heard about this procedure?
