Another problem ID Strawberry candy/Wild Mustang

It is so hard for me to tell from pictures sometimes on Tinkers, but I trust their pics better than sellers usually.

Got Strawberry Candy a couple of years ago in trade, purchased Wild Mustang about the same time. WM came from a box store though so I'm not surprised if it is wrong.

To me they look alike. The height is very close, the size of the flower is very close at about 4". That matches Strawberry Candy, Wild Mustang is supposed to be 6". "Strawberry Candy" is just slightly taller than "Wild Mustang", couple of inches. Bloom time is hard to say because everything is blooming early. For that matter, everything is really tall this year. They both started blooming almost the same day, which comparing with other daylilies I have, would be Mid-late. Wild Mustang is Mid-late blooming, but Strawberry Candy is early.

Any thought?

This flower is larger and looks more orange to me.
Sorry, all I can find of SC is a clump shot:

Bloom is definitely smaller and looks more pink. Plus SC often reblooms here and I've never known WILD MUSTANG to rebloom.

When looking at both of these pictures, note that the band on STRAWBERRY CANDY is "notched." The eye pattern ( because it does appear - although slightly- on the sepals) on WILD MUSTANG is not notched. It appears that you might have two plants of STRAWBERRY CANDY!

My favorite shots are the ones with Maria's gorgeous Mandevilla vines flowering, entwined on her porch railing, with Hippeastrum blooms in the foreground... positively stunning photography! Another shot that I really enjoy is the one where all of Maria's pots are gathered together on the pavement of her driveway, all growing in the sun! It's a photo I'll never forget, having so many pots and such lush foliage! I think Maria lives in an area that has a perfect microcosm of climate for growing Hippeastrum bulbs... a warm and sunny spring and summer, and then a cold enough winter where most of her bulbs can nap in the garage without freezing. In any case, I'm extremely impressed with her growing, and her photography! From my humble beginnings, she's been my mentor... I've learned a lot from Maria, and it was at her urging that I got Veronica Read's book. I'm glad I did. Cindee has also been very instrumental in getting me hooked on bulbs! She and I live at opposite ends of the growing climate, with Florida being very hot with no cold period, and my long Illinois winters and forced indoor growing. I'd love to move just south enough to have similar growing conditions to Maria's.

Lois - It is realy everything I can do to keep from ordering "something" this year. I am not moving or at least I hope not but Dad is not well and I don't know what is up for the coming year. Many changes I suspect. I am only getting my reserves and some annuals. I doubt that I will have even tomatoes this year unless I grow them on the deck. We are hoping to buy this old house from the rest of my sibs as we are all part owners. I have been here taking care of Dad for 5 years and the flowers are mine! We would like to rebuild and design my new yard/gardens. As it is I will have to move a lot of my Peonies and Irises in order to build or I will be sending a lot of you people some very expensive plants if we don't stay here! Maybe I will rent a field or two. :) Till then, all my babies are in holding beds. :D Ginny P.S. Anyone know where crazygardener has been?

You might be able to make a batch the old fashioned way. Before we had those awesome packets of pectin, jammers had to reduce the contents of the pot. Here's a recipe I developed for SavorNC magazine that uses this technique. (I'm in central NC. :) ) Take a look. See if you can use it for timings and temps. Can't hurt to try at this point. Would be a shame to toss those lovely berries. Good luck! Erin Strawberry, Ginger, Tarragon Jam February 13, 2011 2 lbs fresh strawberries, hulled 3 cups sugar zest of 2 lemons (approximately 1 heaping tablespoon) juice of 2 lemons (approximately one third cup) 1/2 cup chopped candied ginger 1 tsp unsalted butter 1/2 cup chopped fresh tarragon 1. Bring berries, sugar, lemon juice, and ginger to a boil over medium heat stirring occasionally. If desired, mash berries with the back of the spoon while stirring. 2. For a well set jam, bring to 220 degrees. This will take at least 30 minutes. For a looser jam, bring to 118 degrees. Stir more frequently as jam nears desired temperature. 3. To test firmness of jam, coat the back of a frozen metal spoon. Draw finger through. Firm jam will not run and will be very sticky. Looser jam will still be quite soft and loose. (Ideal for a cheese well.) 4. Once jam reaches desired firmness, remove from heat. Stir in zest and tarragon. Bring to room temperature before refrigerating until ready to use. Yield: 2 cups

bump on an old thread! i just canned a great experimental batch today: a "low sugar" strawberry jam with balsamic vinegar, black pepper, and cardamom. the cardamom was a variation on the wider-used balsamic/pepper recipe. I basically made the recipe on the package of the Sure Jell Low Sugar pectin box, but with the following variations: *mixed the fruit and sugar (half white/half brown) and let it macerate overnight *strained and brought the syrup to a boil, then let the fruit sit in the boiled syrup most of the day *then proceeded with the process on the Sure Jell box: added pectin, brought to full rolling boil for 1 min *I added 4 tbs balsamic vinegar, about 1/2 tsp fresh ground pepper, and 2 tbs cardamom to the mixture while it boiled then canned in a water bath like normal. turned out super tasty!

Well, I'm inclined to think that both pictures are Strawberry Candy. But, I bought both SC and WM at a big box store, so maybe I didn't get WM after all. And depending on the time of day, lighting, type of camera, and such, I have found that color is very different. I don't see much of an edge on my WM.

Gosh, Nancy, those two flowers sure do look exactly alike. I don't trust the IDs on those big box store daylilies at all though.

I think you have two stawberry candy daylilies!

I dont grow wild mustang, but after reviewing online pics, they just seem more ruffled, with less picotee than what you are growing..

Ha! Sorta what I was thinkin'. Well, other than a larger flower, I'm probably happier to have a large clump of SC since it reblooms. I'll just move them together so I will have a spot for a new daylily! No big deal, I don't really buy from the box store unless it is on good clearance or I see it in bloom. I saw this one in bloom, but it looked like the picture on the tag to me. But it was on clearance too so I didn't pay much for it anyway!

Putting them together sounds like a good plan to me. That would be my kind of thinking... more room for another daylily, lol!
