Real wicker furniture outdoors?

Hopefully within the next month or so our year plus remodel project will end and we can start buying a few pieces of furniture. My main focus will be furniture for the screened porch. I 've been looking at all weather wicker for one of the seating areas, but not finding much available in white which is what I want. The furniture will be placed in a somewhat protected area of the porch. Not to say it'll never get wet, just on the rare occasion. It is extremely humid here, so I'm sure mildew will eventually be a problem and I'd have to hose the furniture down at least once a year. I'm just wondering how real wicker would hold up. Pier 1 has a great sale right now and I'm so tempted.

Do any of you who live in humid environments have real wicker outdoors?

The wet isn't a problem unless it gets wet and stays that way, but you've already figured that out. This stuff is really hardy, though, so a good scrubbing now and again, with a mild detergent in a bucket of water would be a good thing. Keeping the wicker painted will help. Sun is what will cause the most deterioration.

Many manufacturers have 3 types of wicker: natural wicker for indoor use, loom wicker for semi-exposed areas, and vinyl wicker (or weather wicker) for outdoor use. Make sure you choose a vinyl wicker set with an aluminum frame - some cheaper sets have rattan frames that won't hold up outside. BTW, Lloyd Flanders invented loom wicker many years ago. In my case I chose Whitecraft, but there are several good brands.

"Sunbrella" and "Diklon" are the big trade names in "outdoor" fabrics. The critical factor is the COMPOSITION of the fabrics... you want to look for 100% solution dyed ACRYLIC. Doesn't matter what the "brand" is, you guys! What matters is the content of the fabric.

My all weather wicker chase was purchased from Plow and Hearth, but I can tell you that it sits out practically all summer up until late October on bare ground under a hedge. Absolutely no problems after six or seven years. But then again I don't sit on it much because I find the thing so uncomfortable - even with a cushion on it. Just not the same as real wicker. No wear and tear, no rusty feet even. But it should be cleaned more regularly because the synthetic weaving collects dirt and dust much worse than wicker. I put it in the storage barn during the winter.
