Forcing figs to ripen in colder climates

It is exactly one year since I ordered my first two figs which were delivered in mid May 2007. It produced green figs but only two of these ripened on one of the trees before frost. Close to the end of the season I asked questions about forcing figs to ripen in the colder zones, it was suggested (in addition to other techniques such as olive oil drop on the fig eye) that a clear plastic enclosure will help (not air-tight but with provisions for air circulation), and that it is the total cumulative heat that counts toward helping the figs ripened. Now it is the beginning of the new season here in Zone 5 and the question is if this enclosure for total cumulative heat is required right from the start of the season when the fig plants are just leafing out or it should be enclosed when the figlets form on the trees? My concern is the tenderness of the leaves at the start.
