Zumwalt Pics

Here are some pics of my Zumwalt fig. I will post pics when they ripen. It is a breba crop bearer, but should also give main crop figs, without caprification... Soooo, it might not be like Desert King or a sport of it. I will let you know if it give a main crop or drops them.

Jose I have 2 Zumwalts that are three years old. One is in the ground and one is potted. I unwrapped the in ground plant last week and it looks like it is going to bear a breba crop while the potted plant has breba forming. Interestly, this is the first year that either plant has pushed breba. The last two years both plants had a main crop that failed to ripen.

Hmmmmmmm, I have been wondering if it fails to ripen because of the lack of growing time or because it required caprification. I will for sure know this year. So, here it is:

1. If main crop, tree is not the same as Desert king
2. If no main crop, tree might be a sport of DK
That being said, the leaves look very close to DK.

I'm in zone7, so I can for sure find out. I have spoken to the guy that found this tree and he says the main crop does not have time to ripen. I am very excited to find out on my own!

Well I feel like I am at confession but I am one of those SUCKERS that purchased a Zumwalt on Ebay. I do have honorable intentions and have communicated with UCD (Ms Satterwhite) about providing the unique characteristics about the Zumwalt to see if they would take it in their inventory. I must tell you I am impressed with the vendor who sells the Zumwalt! My plant arrived and the package was absolutely crushed. I thought for sure my plant was dead. I photographed the damaged package and vendor offered to send me another plant free of charge. However his process for preparing the package protected the product and it was unharmed. I declined his generous offer. I have had the plant under lights and a heating mat for a couple of months and it has grown 8 inches in size, sent two suckers 10 inches long, and has 5 figs. I plan on providing scion to my friends on the fig forum at request (you pay for shipping) when the plant can handle it. The primary reason to send the scion is I am very grateful for what I have learned from the dialog on this forum. If the Zumwalt is half as good as it sounds, than the $50.50 I paid for mine was a bargain. God Bless Vinnie

Nice pictures gorgi! I'm assuming that is your brother in the picture? He has a nice fig-eatin' grin on his face....I would too! What kind of figs are those? They're huge! And thanks for the picture-adding instructions! I should've known better, I already do that with my myspace page. For whatever reason, I thought there was a special feature on this forum where I could upload shots. Well Jose the wait was worth it. I give the Zumwalt/Desert King breba figs high marks and I would rate it a 9 out of 10. The fig has a pleasant melon flavor and the skin is tender. I only had 6 breba since I have always heavily pruned my Zumwalts to share with friends. Now that I understand that the breba are the best crop I don't plan on pruning my Zumwalt this fall or spring. I did prune this tree this past spring and I have several young plants. I picked the first breba fig from the Zumwalt too early but I gave the others a couple extra days after I thought they were ripe. I couldn't find a yard stick to lean against my tree so I asked my youngest son who is 5'6" to stand next to it. By the way I gave this tree to my son 3 years ago.

Herman if you want to get jujubes the best variety I have found is Honey Jar. It is a bit harder to find but the jujubes taste like honey and there are lots of them. The only problem I have had is occasionally the ants will get at a ripe fruit. They also sucker badly. The best news is no moths, diseases or animals go after them. I have a spare Honey Jar I grafted this spring which I would trade for some of your fig cuttings, drop me an email if you want it. I have had problems getting production off of my figs, they want to produce leaves only and they are five years old now. I have a couple dozen fruit this year from half a dozen trees. I did the pinching at 6 leaves trick this year and I got more figs than last year at least. Scott

Robert, it is supposed to be very cold hardy with no protection and ripen early, a winner for those in colder climates.

I have two Zumwalts in pots. So far they produce a breba crop and a main crop but the main crop fails to ripen do to cold.
I have not been pinching them though and I'm thinking of pinching one or both of them this year to encourage them to ripen the main crop early.

You said some very interesting things. I can see the main crop not ripening in the NW side of the country, but in Arizona in zone 9???

Now, I am having serious thought on if it can even be a main crop producing fig and them falling of because need for caprification.

loslunafarms I have my doubts too but then again the trees are still fairly small. Besides I have a few other varieties which are known to produce a main crop about the same size and they too have not had time to ripen before our mild winter sets in so I still have hope.

I thought you both would be interested to know that I used Vasile's pinching technique. The trees branched well and pushed fruit but the main crop just didn't ripen (two years running). As stated by the seller, the first crop is sweet but the main crop doesn't ripen at his Oregon home.
I think my preliminary results and the narrative of the ebay seller point to the plant requiring caprification.

I am leaning toward what Johnsvmf is saying, it may require caprification.

If this is the case, then is this tree any different from desert king or a sport of it?

it may or may not help you to look at san pedro type class figs to compare yours with.
Recently i aquired one unknownly were the 2nd crop needs the wasp to make them ripe.

Here is my 2 Cents:
This fig looks like DK.
Yet I had other figs looking like DK,but they were less tasty.
I have 2 examples,one from Italy,and one from Oregon.
The one from Oregon,was given to me as a trade ,by the name of Osborn prolific.
They were both very close to DK,yet not exactly the same.
And by the way,My DK,keeps some of the main crop,fruits,get them ripe,but they have very poor taste.
