Hi Jose:Congratulation:I have no doubt this fig will be very good and adapted to your climate.
My similar tree (Desert King),is also very tasty,but now is 5 yrs old and the most I got from it was 4 ripe fruits.
In other words is not as productive as I would like to be.
I bet it has something to do with climate.
I just wonder how old is yours and how many fruits have on this year.

Herman, my tree is 2 years old, about 2.5 feet tall. It has about 12 figs on it.

My Bayernfiege Violetta on the other hand has about 30+ for a 3 foot tall tree.

Jose thanks for the picture. Did the fig swell just prior to ripening? Your ripe fig looks about the size of my unripe Zumwalt fruit.

By the way my plant is 3 years old and 6' tall. I only have 6 figs but I attribute that to heavy pruning last fall so I could share cuttings.

I appreciate the pictures and will share photos and comments when the fruit is ripe.

The fig swelled slightly about a 1.5 weeks. The first few I picked were not quite ripe, this one was spot on. Please post your pics.

The size of the fruits is consistent to my Desert King,EXCEPT,that my figs turn grennish yellow,while the pix above is green,in my opinion.Of course it can be a result of different,climate,but it could also be another distinct cultivar.

Well Jose the wait was worth it. I give the Zumwalt/Desert King breba figs high marks and I would rate it a 9 out of 10. The fig has a pleasant melon flavor and the skin is tender. I only had 6 breba since I have always heavily pruned my Zumwalts to share with friends. Now that I understand that the breba are the best crop I don't plan on pruning my Zumwalt this fall or spring. I did prune this tree this past spring and I have several young plants.

I picked the first breba fig from the Zumwalt too early but I gave the others a couple extra days after I thought they were ripe.

I couldn't find a yard stick to lean against my tree so I asked my youngest son who is 5'6" to stand next to it.

By the way I gave this tree to my son 3 years ago.

Just as a heads up, all of my main crop figs have fallen off after getting to about a quarter size.

Sooo, the BIG question: is the Zumwalt (fig) unique?

Jose many of my main crop figs are larger than a quarter and appear healthy. Last year I had a large number of main crop figs that hung on until the plant went dormant at which time I pulled the unripe fruit off.

Gorgi, other then my Zumwalt I don't own a DK so I can't really answer your question. However, I can say I am satisfied with the breba that I ate this year and I look forward to seeing how productive the Zumwalt is without being heavily pruned.
