Here's my straight answer, Not Enough!
And this not a guess. LOL

The sad part about it is so many went to waste last summer because it was mostly cool/cold.

Last year I had the best crop ever! But was mostly wasted.

What you are suggesting is that on a 2000 calories a day diet. One should eat about 40 figs a day.

Is this correct?

When you think about it... if you eat 40 figs/day on the days there are ripe figs, it averages out to ~6/day for the year. That is NOT too many.

One one day last year me and my father ate a total of 80 figs. Probably me 50 him 30. But that was at the end of August, prime fig picking season in my zone.

It starts out as several a day then more as season carries on for a short period when they come in more steadily 20-30 a day. My daughter can eat quite a few when she is home as well.
Soon i will get many more as the other trees mature and will dry even more and do more thing with them.
At about 50 calories a piece i will be a very stubby bald headed italian in no time.

I win the prize for eating zero figs. My one little first year tree has produced zero so far, and although I have 5 leafing cuttings, there are no figs there either. I'm enjoying this thread, and fingers crossed that one day I'll be able to join in!

I'll eat my figs as long as Olivia (I Claudius) is nowhere to be seen. I'll never forget that scene where she slowly poisoned Ceasar Agustus, and he would only eat fresh figs. She is there on his deathbed, and as the doctor proceeds to finish things up, she turns, and gives the afterthought, "Oh, don't eat the figs!" YIKES!!

All this talk about eating figs has gotten me to open a bag of Sun-Maid California Calimyrna figs. I am eating them right now as I write......just love the crunch of those seeds. They were on clearance at a local grocery store for $0.75 per 6 oz bag......couldn't help buying all twenty bags. The expiration date is February 2012......ha ha that is funny....no chance these figs will ever reach the expiration date. I much prefer the Mission figs; but, these are good too.

For fresh figs.......I love the seed crunch and NUTTY FLAVOR of the large seeds inside of my Yellow Marseilles figs. Absolutely satisfying and quite delicious.

Desertdance, I love I,Claudius. Yes that same scene always stuck in my head also. Funny, it didn't make me like figs one bit less. Always after seeing it I could only thing about what a shame that she wasted all those figs just to get him to eat one poisoned fig :D.

She got her wish!! She was Queen Evil!! I'm pretty sure she poisoned the whole plate of fresh figs!! She left nothing to chance!

Since my trees are not producing yet we usually buy some fresh figs at the supermarket when in season. How many? usually we buy out the whole stock at the market. We've bought as much as ten to twelve flats at a time. Is that enough? We do that a few times in a season. We make sure we have enough under our belt until the next time we find fresh figs and that's not counting the dried Turkish figs we buy off season. I've always said that if I went to Europe during the fig season I would park myself under a fig tree and not move until I eat all the ripe figs on the tree. At 50 calories a pop I will probably come back a different person altogether. WHAT A WAY TO GO!!!!!! But seriously, I would guess my consumption of fresh figs to about a flat of 18 every 2 days for about a month.

There are some really nice U-Pick-It fig and fruit orchards in my area. One owner told me that for him to make money with some fig pickers......he would have to weigh both the picker and their baskets before and after the fruit were picked. Wonder how many figs a fig picker can pick and enjoy eating without the fig picker paying the U-Pick-It guy for ALL of the ripe figs that were picked and eaten right off of his trees??

The Romero brothers (Dan and Ed) operate two of the nicest fruit orchards that you have ever seen. One brother is big into figs. He is still looking for a very large fig that his grandfather grew. From what he described to me, perhaps it is an old variety that once grew at LSU. It was called "Wonderful". I'm hoping to find it for him.

Many Asians will frequent those orchards especially for picking and eating those Asian pears right off the trees. They are so expensive in the stores. Real pretty to see all those golden globes growing on those rows of trees.

It was at their orchards where I first had my fill on Smith figs. It is an absolutely delicious fig and one of the top rated figs in my collection. They love the LSU Improved Celeste fig as it is a real money maker for their operations.

When we had a fig tree in L.A we ate 8 to 15 figs a day. Fig preserves require a 120 mile RT drive to the big city. So don't eat much of that...but love it!

I do buy dry figs and soak them some to use in salads. They are from Greece. Maybe eat a couple hundred figs a year that way.

If I had year round, all I wanted figs, I could eat about 2400 to 3500 figs a year just in fresh eating. If my intestines did not rebel, I could eat up to 20 in a day. Especially if they are the ripe ones with the honey-dew drop coming out of the figs bung hole.

I seldom buy figs here. They go for .60 to. 85 cents each and are only so-so. I am expecting big things this year. My new trees that replaced my old frozen trees are doing well!

In South Florida we get the occasional fig that the birds miss, the actual fig pigout happens when Publix supermarkets bring in the fresh figs from california, usually they'll have calimyrna, BT, black mission, kadota. I get enough for a couple of serious 'stuff your face full of figs' sessions and that will last for a while.

Then as Christmas nears, my family will make cookies with dried figs and chocolate. I occasionally take a roll of dried figs with me to work and pick on from time to time...

I was born and raised on a tiny Med. Sea island,
with plenty of figs to go around; and ate plenty of them.

ONE fact I had (self) learned was to NEVER/ever eat
figs at that midday-day-time when they are "hot" by
that blazing sun; else you get diarrhea!...

Another similar unpleasant effect (stinky-gas...)
may happen if one eats too many of them 'dried'
figs available at most markets/stores...

Last year we had 35 Figs. But with a family of 11 that is not enough. My 6 grand kids eat them faster than me. I think all I ate may be 5. But our local market got figs last year not every day however. I bought several times when I see it on display but it is not as sweet and juicy as my own.

My figs and I both had a bad year in 2010. I only ate about 25 I think - maybe 15 Lattarula, 10 Desert King, 10 Petite negri, 5 Brunswick... Oh that's 40. Maybe not so bad after reading other's results. I've had much more productive years, hundreds. Next year will be better, I hope and will try to make it so and wish the same for you all.

Reading through this thread I keep thinking of that tongue twister "How many figs could a fig picker pick if a fig picker could pick figs". Say it 10 times very fast....

This is a very fun post. I love hearing about all of your fig trees and check for new posts all the time. My count for last season was about 490 total. My daughter and I are the only fig eaters in the household-and we were wishing we had more. It was mostly fresh eating, except a couple jars of jam.
I had to wait patiently for a couple years for the trees to get more mature and a little pinching here and there and everywhere sure pushed the development of figlets. It will be so exciting to see what they all do this season.
One of my trees never made more than a dozen figs, until it was 5-6 years old and got a severe "haircut" from me. After shortening all the branches and adding the fertilizer, along with the pinching, finally it made about 50 figs.
I hope it will be a productive year for all of us fig nuts.
