Magnolia fig pics

These pics were taken late summer 09.

Due to the summer we didn't have I was still lucky enough to get to taste a couple. I think if it was a little warmer and had they really ripen the way they needed to be then they would have been very great.

They grew to almost the size of a tennis ball and turned like amber in color outside and sort of goldish but hollow from the inside. Don't know if that's normal but we'll see again this summer and hope we do have a summer.

They have shallow roots so keep this in mind as you water them. If it is very hot & dry where you are keep them watered. I have to water mine extra during July/Aug only in my zone or the leaves look like what you described. Watering mine makes all the difference. When it doubt if they have enough water stick something into the ground about 4 to 5" deep to make a hole & then stick your finger in to see if the soil is dry. Also it will take them 2 years to settle in & get established.

I can't get any Evergreen Magnolias locally, I don't know why they don't sell them they are listed zone 6 hardy. I have yet to see about snow of course, that could be why they don't sell them here. Our Pinus Strobus or white pine have snapped branches from snow in the past. I actually like the big glossy leaves so much, flowers are just an added bonus. Dzit, is the tanned back from lots of sun, that makes sense, I saw some in Florida with lots of tan. Njoasis, mine is seed grown from the plain species, (sorry if you already know that) and is said to be zone 6 or 5. We have been having zone 7 winters for 5 or 6 years in a row. I think it should be okay for hardiness. I want a Brackens Brown B eventually. I want to see the ultimate size of BBB my yard is getting full. If I don't get some Hazelnuts soon those suckers are going to get removed and I will put the Brackens BB in their place. I hope I replied to everyone who posted.

THANKS Cecil....ACTUALLY your right lol, we ate lots of them off the mother tree & we took a huge bag of them when we left YUM! I saved the biggest prettiest 1, I was going to weigh it & take pictures later! We then stopped at a friends house & they have 2 pigs & it had baby pigs (so me being the animal lover I am HAD to feed pigs) before I knew what I had done I had fed every last fig! I wasn't even thinking I just thought HOW CUTE gotta feed PIGS! Afterward I realized CRAAAAP I even fed the fig I was saving @%*%

Island, I also have this cultivar. I may be chopping it down this year! I have about a half dozen cultivars of grandiflora--this one is quite different from any of the others. It grows maybe twice as fast if not more than the others It branches densely, even to ground level Green on the underside (as you noted) Lighter green leaves Leaf shape is almost avocado-like Mine does not burn as harshly has yours, but it burns more than the others Biggest problem are its poor tolerance for any snow or ice, while the others look fine. My poor guy suffered collateral damage from other downed trees in the hurricane and just took another hit. It even got attacked by deer this past November. I have always identified it as 'Green Giant'. Sure it would try to recoup but hate seeing the damage.

Good idea - putting the rocks on the pots to keep the wind from blowing them over.

I have a 25gl pot with the tree reaching about 6' or 7' tall and when it gets very hot the soil quickly dries up and makes the pot very light and tips over. I placed about 30lb. or 40lb. of rocks over the pot and it does help.

It is labeled as a Magnolia fig. I thought it was a Weeping/BLK Weeping till Bass corrected me last summer. I have lefted at that.

Hope someone can confirms its true indentity.

As you and others probably noticed over time im not really good at explaining things nor spelling stuff.
Seems i always leave something out when i type something and or put things in wrong order.
Oh well least i dont forget eat the figs !

The effort you put in is very good enough to me and I think to everyone else.
No complaints here my friend. Keep up the good work, You're an asset!

I'm having a short trip this time. Meaning I will be home in a week to work on the garden. Have to be home on Wednesday 14th for some personnel business and on the 18th it will be me and my wifes 17th year married. Don't have a dog but I will need a dog house if I miss this one so I just might take a week off to play it safe.

Lovely looking plant Rafed, does it start to weep naturally or is it from the weight of the figs?

Nelson,

This is my third year with this cultivar.
Last year I used bamboo to hold the branches from the weight of the figs.

I am using a 1/2in.wide bamboo stick to hold the main stem from bending and it doesn't have any leaves yet.
The tree it self is about 4' tall but the main stem is no wider than 3/4in at the base.

The plant is unique and I love the way it looks.

Rafed I agree it is definately a Unique plant I have a magnolia plant coming shortly maybe we can compare later on this season.
