This years weather was cold, then boiling hot, then so humid with thunderstorms that managed to knock over everything but not enough rain. I didn't get around to taking many early June pictures but my husband took some with his 35mm. Here are a few:

Very, very nice! I really like the different colors of the flowers together. You must have plenty of land for all of those gardens.

I think it may be worth it for you to hire someone from a reputable local nursery to come out and help you identify your plants and maybe even have a plan drawn up for you, of your current plantings. This will help you with your "inventory" and further be able to research proper care of your lovelies. When looking for said individual, during your initial phonecalls, ask if it'd be possible for that individual to give you some advice on their proper care. There is a nursery here that would provide that kind of consultation for a fee of $85/hour, which given your extensive plantings, I would do that in a HEARTBEAT! My limited advice so far.... in the case of that peach.... eliminate those suckers.... they're stealing energy from the main plant. Same thing with whatever the shrub is at the corner of the house.... has the glossy foliage and is pruned to a tree form.... get rid of those suckers. Just in case you don't know what a sucker is, it's not a derogatory term (at least in this case), take a look at the link below.... Here is a link that might be useful: Tree suckers

Yes, Jeff (regarding the ternstoemia). Me, too. It's one of the plants that I would like to see another picture of. Any chance of a couple of close-ups of #18 (Japanese Cleyera), ljbrandt? Same with #1. I've wondered about that one being a Helleri. Say....does anyone think that #1 might be Abelia? All of those long little stems.... Ljbrandt, I'm going to suggest that you leave the Crape myrtle alone. It was a very bad specimen to begin with; more like a nursery cull if you ask me. It 'might' have been salvageable as a teensy weensy youngster. However, though it is almost always suggested that crossing and rubbing branches be eliminated, I would hesitate to do so on this tree. What you'd be left with would be very awkward looking, indeed. To say nothing about how stressful the removal of that much mass is to the overall health of the tree. I'd like to see the upper branches of this tree. Have the original owners topped it (whacked it down) at any time? If not, it might not be bad looking, after all! Don't go crazy with your pruners! The worst thing you can do is whack things off before understanding how, when, and why...and IF something should be pruned. For now, go ahead and remove all of the growth coming from the bottom of that Ligustrum (#5). You want to maintain a trunk just like a pretty tree. Remove any stems that have died, too. A pair of sharp hand pruners for this job. Looks like about a 5 minute project. Same goes for that ornamental whatever-it-is. The pretty pink flowered tree you mistook for a dogwood on your photo album. ALL of those long stems coming from the base of the plant need to be removed. The wrap holding the stake to the main trunk MUST be removed. Poor little thing. That long line of Euonymus needs to be sheared. I hate what gas powered or electric shears do to plants, and would get a good pair of long handled shears to keep on hand. Good job on the grass! Keep us up to date on your progress! Before and after pictures are fun.

Thank you everyone! I haven't noticed any hummer activity at the lobelia, we don't have that many around here and the neighbor feeds them with her feeder. I'm sure they pop by them when I'm not around. I did see a butterfly at the purple lobelia. The bees are enjoying the helenium and the agastache and echinacea planted near it. The camera I use is a Sony Mavica MVC CD-400, an older camera but works alright. I'd rather have a newer one with more mega pixels, this has 4, but it was free so I'll use it until I wear it out. That little green and black bug reminds me of a miniature dinosaur. I'm going to have to search and find out what it is. Karen

Thank you :) 4th from last orchid is Iwanagara Appleblossom - easy to grow, likes high light and is very fragrant. I bought it years ago as a seedling from SunBulb (bagged seedlings you find at Lowes or Home Depot) Other orchids in the pictures: 1. Group shot: a hybrid phal - P. Rong Guan Amah - with Blptm. Midnight blue 'Cardinal's Roost' and a broken spike of Cymbidium Sunshine Falls 'Butterball' 2. Cattleya bowringiana var. coerulea , Brazilian species, from a nursery in Brazil (export) 3. Outstanding! I love the poppy and iris combo. What I wouldn't give to look out my window and see what you are able to see. It must be wonderful to walk through your gardens. I don't guess that I have ever seen a locust tree bloom. I've got to have one.

Is the tall spiky yellow plant thermopsis? I have never
seen it in real life. Is it one big bush or several plants? Is it hard to grow. I have trouble with lupines--
not sprouting them, getting them to survive beyond one year.

Truly cottage garden heaven!! How old is your garden? I can only imagine the work you've put into making your garden the paradise that it is. What is that white rose beside the porch? I'm not a big fan of white roses but that's gorgeous. Thanks for sharing and I hope you'll continue. It's pictures like yours and others on the forum that keep me from giving up.

and to think, I almost didn't open this; thought I had already seen them! I need to be more careful. I sure wouldn't have wanted to miss the tour.

Hi everyone, Thanks for all the nice words. I always forget that there are new people on here all the time. I thought most people had seen my garden already so when I post pictures, I try find ones that are different in some way so people don't get bored. The pictures here are from early to mid June and although there are many different flowers in bloom, the poppies and iris steal the show.. My next set of pictures are late June with all the later flowering roses in bloom but I will post them later.
To answer all your questions; the garden has been a 20 year work in progress, the tall yellow flower is thermopsis. I got these at the NY Botanical gardens and there are 3 plants. They are very east to grow. Another plant that's easy and looks like lupine is Baptisia Carolina Moonlight. The white shrub in front of the porch is not a rose but a mockorange shrub that is sooooo fragrant and easy to grow. The locust Tree you can get from Forrest Farm Nursery. We live on five acres but I only garden on about one acre or maybe even half an acre, I'm not sure. ttyl Regina

WOW! Beautiful! Pretty much at a loss for words here.... would love to have about a whole day to tour your garden with you... with a notepad and a pen! LOL..

You have put many years of work into that and although I'd love to have a garden as magnificent as that I know that on this rental property we are currently on I can't. Although we are in the process of buying a 6 acre piece of land in upstate NY... nothing on it yet.. not even any trees. It was a division of a farmer's field that got sold off when he passed away. I'm thinking of planting some trees up there soon so that they'll be grown quite a bit by the time we actually move up there.

Anyways... sorry to hijack this thread. Just wanted to tell you that you have an awesome looking garden and I'm looking forward to LOTS and LOTS more photos!! :-D

Thanks again everyone. The poppie in the first picture is Coral Reef, I think I got it from Bluestone. I start all my annual poppies from seed and started a few perennials ones from seed but I bought these along time ago and have divided them several times. I do not know the name of this particular iris but it is darker than the picture shows. Like a dark blue/purple. I think it is a common one. Regina

Very beautiful flowers! Such an abundance of blooms! And you have beautiful countryside as a backdrop.

I think that's an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail on your Buddleia. So many blooms on the butterfly bush!

WOW! I haven't been around much this year but boy am I glad I dropped by the cottage today. That is absolutely the most beautiful cottage garden I have EVER seen! I saved one in my inspiration folder. Love it! I even got DH out of his chair to see the picture. . .LOL! I don't do that very often so that shows you how much I love it!
