More blooms in NE Ohio

Slowly starting, it seems each morning I have two FFOs. I can hardly wait for sunrise just to check it out. I try to guess who will show their face the next morning, but I do have surprises. Here are a few. Lava Flow opened with twin FFOs and they were just wonderful. I know this one I went and got due to someone (rita) posting pics of it here!!! :) Many thanks,it is so great that we are able to see so many daylilies here in real gardens!!!

Francois Verhaert. Today it has 5 blooms on it!! I need to wait for full opening to grab a picture.

Navajo Princess FFO, wasn't so sure it looked like NP, but with looking at others pics, it is. Just surprised it opened so soon , as it is supposed to be a later bloomer here and I did get it at a local daylily display garden this spring.

Here is a better pic of Ninja Throwing Star, I know I am gonna love this one, once it gets settled in.

Pat Garrity, FFO, yelled at me this morning from across the garden. Wasn't expecting this one to open today.

Here it is from further away, you can see how I lay the daff foliage down to get it out of the way, then I slowly pull it out as it browns, most of the daff folliage is gone now in my gardens. After the folliage is gone, I will top dress as you can see behind it where the tulips were.

Brocaded Gown, always an early bloomer here.

Sharks Tooth. love this one too, and it blooms early.

Cindy, those are really nice!!! I especially like the rich, saturated colors of Lava Flow and Incendiary. Your clump around the bottle tree is eye-catching!

I'm so jealous you have so many blooming already. My only blooms have been on new additions that are blooming on southern time.

Lava Flow is definitely the cream of the crop, in my opinion.

I have two different colored ones that I received in a trade in the fall of '06. Much to my surprise, they are still going strong. Both are the size of small shrubs and they bloom profusely every year. My soil has lots of clay and when planting them, we dug a nice sized hole and amended the soil. Both plants have definitely outgrown the original hole by now and don't seem to mind what they are growing in. One has started to gift me with several seedlings every year, which I try to find homes for since it's so hardy and such a wonderful plant. Definitely the seeds from this one are fertile. I have never found seedlings around the other one though. And I do heavily mulch both sights. I only trim off the dead ends when the plants leaf out in the spring. That's really all I do for them. Krycek1984, I want to address a few points brought up in your post. First, there's really need for more personal attacks. There were enough of those already in this thread. While I sometimes disagree with iforgotitsonevermind, she certainly isn't generally ignorant, and even when she and I see things in almost totally opposite ways, I don't think she tries to be arrogant. Maybe she gets a little over excited, but don't well all. Iforgotitsonevermind's concern was not whether mimosa is currently considered an invasive pest in the area, but whether it had the potential to be in the near future. Your assurance that it "will not become an invasive species unless global warming goes crazy", falls short of convincing me. As I said above, I'm not convinced that it will ever become a problem, but your assertion, that it's not even close, doesn't convince me the other way, either, and seems to be based more on feeling than proof. Your question about who cares if you plant Bradford pears can have many answers including a number of invasive plant groups (which are concerned about their damage to the environment in many areas), neighbors (who worry about the trees falling over the property line onto their car, producing a foul smell, or making the neighborhood ugly when they fall apart at an early age), and those that want to share information they've learned from their mistakes or observations.

Thanks gardengal! Since I just planted it last autumn it only grew about a foot maybe before winter. I checked on it today and found some healthy leaf axils on each stem and cut to those. Can't wait to see her in action! I already saw some green growth happening under the mulch! Yippee! Spring is coming soon!

your info about sun light seems on the mark. yes the pacific northwest is just about a cloudy as we are. they have green houses at stan hwyet (akron), rockerfeller park & the cleveland botanical garden (cleveland) where you could talk with the staff for info. Jan Becker at Beckers Herbs on Killian rd in green(?) can be amazingly free with information-- but she doewsn't have many exotics. going to OSU at Wooster might not help as they don't have as much grey as we do. You might try so of the growers up in lake county. But they may just be starter plant people. diggerb

You are so right Cindy. Seeing the blooms from real gardens here, especially from your own zone is so exciting. It is also the photos I most trust. Got those wish lists growing. Beautiful blooms, beautiful setting. Seeing Incendiary close up and in clump is great. Love that rich color. Sometimes those berry colors can look a little gray. This one is yummy. I stood up from the monitor to look at them from a distance. It was great, like I was there. We are the same zone but I have only had 2 bloom so far. I must have few earlies.

Isn't it too exciting that they are starting in the north? :) I also have a few blooms on new southern ones.

All flowers look great and my favorite is Incendiary both individual flower and in that last picture!

I got Navajo Princess last spring and was surprised to see scapes on it this year so early, maybe it does it only in the beginning?

What do you top dress with?

Oh Cindy, your Tango Lilies are just stunning! But then I do love Tango lilies as a have lots of then here also. Many just like yours. Love the garden shot and you can go on anyday with all those beautiful daylilies.

I was glad to see how you lay your daff folliage down. Mine just flops all over the place as it lays itself down :-(

Well, the daylilies are great. Lovely blooming early garden you have. My very favorite is LAVA FLOW. Not a big surprise, huh? I also really love Navajo Princess. It is just so pretty.

Why on earth are you apologizing! You know this this audience wants to see pictures, and I think we all love garden shots. Your garden is always lovely! That is a beautiful picture of Lava Flow! And yes, Rita is a class one enabler. I really like Shark's Tooth and Incendiary and your lilies are gorgeous!

Lovely daylilies! I think Shark's tooth might be my favorite, with Incendiary & Lava Flow close behind. Pat Garrity is bright & cheery. I agree, this forum is really great for finding wonderful daylilies. You never know when a site has touched up their photos, & you never hear that the photo they showed is the only nice bloom it has had in 10 years :)

Good show today! From the bold and bright Lava Flow to the ethereal Ninja Throwing Star, you have so much variety in your blooms already. Shark's Tooth really has my kind of colors, so I will go with it as my favorite today.

LAVA FLOW and NAVAJO PRINCESS are very beautiful.
The yellow lilies are so pretty with the speckling.

Oh My! I love all your photos, but when I scrolled down to the one of 'Incendiary' I was blown away. I just received that one today in my Maryott order and now I am even prouder of myself for ordering it. Your photo of it is stunning.
I also really like that 'Pat Garrity' for its bold coloring
and that 'Hayride Kisses' is such a cheerful, cute bloom.
Where did you get that one? I have never heard of it.
I have a scape on my brand-new 'Navajo Princess' so I can't
wait!

Thanks everyone for looking and commenting. I will post more. I have several open this morning, but it is actually cool out, so they may take awhile to fully open.!!
Nat4b I top dress with compost, bagged manure, bagged topsoil, and bagged garden soil, that I mix up. In the past I had top dressed with mushroom compost, but found it had too many pieces of gravel in it, don't know what that was all about. I make my own compost to use.
Kay, Yes, Lava Flow is a beautiful daylily, and I had to laugh because the photo on Frank Smith's website, is actually terrible, can you believe it!!! I would have never bought it from his photo. Needed Rita's photo, to know I wanted it!!
Also, Jean, I think it was your photo of Incendiary, that had me searching for that one!
Celeste, you will not be disappointed, I had also bought Incendiary from Maryott.
Hayride Kisses is a Schaben 07, I won it on the auction from Mike Grossman, he has Northern Lights Daylilies, which is a good site to see which ones are northern hardy.
