This survey is from Pina , Mallorca (SPAIN).

Mallorca was one of the main fig producers , but still the Island is full of old fig-trees.

My friend Xon, is the Col de Dame the green variety or the Col de Dame Negra? What is another name for Figa Flor? Happy Easter!

The White coll de dama is less appreciated than Black ( Negra ). Here , mainly we prefer the dark figs.
The other one I think is the first crop of Roja . Figa Flor means breva in Catalan language.

I live in zone 7a. I don't trust the temperature outside at all it kills the trees. Even the fig trees will come from the root you will have very short season. I have Brown Turkey, Black Jack, Hardy Chicago, Italian ever bearing Black Mission and Celestia. My figs are planted in Pots and Hide in the Garage in Winter. I dig the pots into a raised bed in the garden in summer. I make sure my season is as long as it could be last year I had two crops. Starting in March I wheel the pots out in the sun which we had nice sun in March so far and back in the Garage at night. I have the Italian and Celestia in full bloom and the others are breaking pods all over. The last Frost we had last year was April 10. So I say April 15, the tax day the trees will be out and I am hoping to be eating riping Figs in June. Then have another crop in late August.

Well trevor you could get as many answers as there are fig varieties in the world! A lot of people on this forum have said that it all depends on where the fig is grown, if its best characteristics will be brought out. So the best tasting fig might be a regional thing, and also depend on soil and the weather that year. In my region, (southern California, zone 9/10, in a semi-coastal area), we don't have to worry about things like fruit souring because of summer rains, so the popular commerical varieties are Black Mission, Kadota, Conadria. For the desert, I pick Kadota, and for general climates on the West Coast, Black Mission. A dwarf version of Black Mission is Black Jack, which I grow. However, since I started growing my own back yard figs several years ago I have tried other, less-known varieties, and two that stand out to me are Negronne (aka Violette de Bordeaux) and Panache Tiger. Their flavor is different from most other fig varieties -- an intensely sweet "jam" flavor -- and they can trump Black Jack and Kadota on a good year with long hot summers in my opinion. On a cooler year, they are still very good, but then I'd rather have Black Jack, which has a good quality independant of the weather. So there is no simple answer to your question... It might help to get recommendations if you could state your region and climate zone, because a lot of a fig's developing flavor depends on that. Fig forumites would then be able to give you answers more tailored to your situation.

Sue is right in my opinon about no best tasting fig. Everyone has different opinons on what constitutes a best tasting fig for them, some like real sweet , some like a rich fig taste etc,etc. Also i believe the same variety grown in differrent parts of the world or country will also have a different taste as well, maybe not a hugh difference but some. Nice thing though with so many different types theres bound to be some that fit the taste buds of that individual. Martin

Is the Coll de dama available in the states? what other names might it be under, since cole de dame is the green fig.
As we all know, figs will taste different according to the climate they were grown in. Mallorca has a long dry and hot summer perfect for figs.
cole de dame is a long season fig, and will not ripen on time for us in the northeast of US.

No , Coll de dama , not is a long season fig in my zone. Bordissot , Cendrosa , Henvernesca , Â and other figs ripen later than Coll de dama.
Coll de dama is a fig with high level sugar and has notes of honey and strawberry taste.
Cendrosa is more sugared than Coll de Dama , but without notes ,sometimes no ripens.
I donÂt know what is the natural limit to ripen the Coll de dama.
It is true , for the same variety the different taste depends of the climate.
If the fig variety is low level sugar you could grow this fig-tree in whatever climate and never you will achieve a high sugar level.
If the climate not is according to the variety is worse, the figs never ripen.
I think that we are amateurs , collectors or both and we can enlarge a little the limits but it is impossible for a commercial growing.
There are a lot of examples in this forum of this, with success and without.
In my case the Coll de dama that I'm growing in pots t, they ripen two week before than grown in ground.

I've had Black Coll de Dama ripen in a pot, but not yet in the ground. It's still too early to say why the fig hasn't ripened from the ground tree, as it may just be a question of maturity of the tree. But you may be right too that the season here is just not long enough. The pot would allow it an earlier start than in the ground. I have the white in the ground too, and haven't had it ripen anything yet either. Herman has had some to ripen though. Don't know whether his were in a pot or the ground.

Gene:My col de Dame Wht,was in 41/4gall.bucket,wich in turn was buried 3/4,in the ground.
I found out it was too deep,as it was hard to dig it out.
Now i think 1/2 buried in the ground will be better.
