Boring inects killed my arborvitae?

We've got a row of 8 arbs, about 8 years old, approx. 8 ft. tall. One died. It was on the end of the row, facing east, and got the most sun. If any one tree seemed healthier and more robust than the others, even as recently as a few months ago, it would have been that arb.

... The tree had 3 main trunks about 1-1/2" in diameter. It was obvious as the tree was rapidly drying out and dying, that one trunk was still healthy. After I pulled out the tree, I sawed the trunks off at the base, and saw that the center or core of each dead trunk was eaten away, or missing. The healthy trunk was intact. I saw no insects or larvae, except a reddish brown thousand-legger, and not sure if it actually came from the core hole.

... Any idea what happened, and what or who the culprit might be? Thanks
