For the interested people in Canada there is a new online nursery selling fig trees. I met the owner this weekend and he is a nice guy. I spent almost two hours with him chatting about figs!

dieseler-Martin I just bought 3 ,one galon container fig plants at Ted`s greenhouse at Tinley Park,IL they was not labeled so I not sure what kind of Figs I got.I am new with fig trees but I think I`d to start these plants from cuttings,If you need to trim your figs at Fall to fit them in your garage ,I would be wery happy I could get few cuttings from you.I live in south suburbs so I could stop by to pick`em up. If a tree is grown from Tissue Cultured apical meristems, it is possible to have a 100% virus free variety. However viruses can be spread by fig mites and unless someone is scrupulous about only growing tissue cultured figs and keeping the collection free of mites, it is only a matter of time before that variety is also infected. Most collectors don't seem to care too much about viruses because nearly all fig varieties seem to produce reasonably well despite having strong evidence of various types of viruses. A commercial grower on the other hand might prefer varieties that are completely virus free for maximum productivity. This is where tissue culture might have huge benefit. The technology isn't particularly novel or difficult so I am wondering why the demand isnt there. I am hypothesizing that perhaps the productivity of trees isn't that badly affected at least for the commercially successful varieties. Now if I could only get someone to culture a virus free Ischia Black - USDA for me. I am happy to provide cuttings!

I would recommend Fedco, or Cummins Nursery if you're interested in fruit trees. They're both in New England so your purchases will have a better chance of survival and the shipping should be less. Both sell trees and also rootstocks and scions to give you an opportunity to do your own grafts. I've bought from both. Fedco in their catalog recommends semi full trees for the far north. They seem to indicate in their catalog that trees will not produce the same growth in the far north. Your zone 6b makes me guess your near the coast, so that may not apply. If you're interested in trees other than fruit I'd suggest you check out Musser's Forest in North Central Pennsylvania. They sell in large quantities for seedlings. For instance for a 5 rate they charge $2.70 each for Sugar Maple. For a 300 rate they charge $0.40 each.

Any recommendation for a nursery selling trees with 1 1/2" caliper?

A municipality requiring boulevard trees of a specific caliper is pretty much SOP. I have dealt with it numerous times when doing design work for developments or apartment complexes. 1 1/2-2" is not at all uncommon. This is most definitely a local issue. A 1 1/2-2 inch caliper trees is going to be 7-10 feet tall and with a large, heavy rootball.....not something that is possible to order by mail, let alone be an economical option. The shipping costs would likely exceed the cost of the tree! Your first move is to ask the governing authority requiring this where to locate said trees. I'm sure they've encountered this situation numerous times so must have sources for referral. And yes, be prepared to shell out a few bucks. This is why you see so many cheesy tree selections - like purple leaf plums - at new developments. They are cheap, disposable, short lived trees but fit the requirements. Wait until you encounter some gung-ho greeny municipal authority requiring a buffer zone of 3 inch caliper native species!! They are virtually impossible to source! We had to apply for a waiver in order to get approval even to get a building permit.

I was able to get to it but it is written in French. I guess I( will wait until I graduate from my French classes to try to use it.

Hi, is this site down again? It worked after Nov 4 for a few days but I only get 404 error now. I'm using Mozilla Firefox on Rogers internet. Does anyone else have problems assessing this site?

After getting to the main page of the Brugmansia-Quebec website, click the "English" icon located on the leftmost
text box.
Make sure you add the correct shipping fee to your order.

I've just ordered some fig plants from this nursery.
I like the service(they sent me email promptly)so if anyone in Canada wants to make the purchase, I would highly recommend this nursery.
