My cottage garden in progress.

15 years ago

My husband and I are working on making our house look more like a cottage. He's in the process of building a picket fence. The edging is in and we plan of planting a cottage style garden inside the perimeter of the fence. Also in the plans are a new wood porch, new front door, windows and shutters.

Here's how it looks so far;

This is how it looked before we moved in.

A pic of the fence. The front is finished and our driveway side is done. When it stops raining I'll updated pics.

It is amazing the change to the house just from the addition of the fence. It really brightens up the exterior. Some day I'll get siding repainted. I have no idea what to do with the brick.

The biggest problem I'm facing is the lilac in the front corner. Despite a severe pruning it is still massive, it's tripled in size since taking this photo last month.

It's just in a horrible spot. I've heard all about how horrible lilacs are to dig up. I was wondering if maybe we could spray something on to kill it, cut it down to the ground and grow something over it.

Any other tips to make the house more cottagy? Paint colour suggestions?
