New toy! Yeehaw

My new toy is ready to use! I now have a 23 hp tractor with rototiller, something I've wanted for years. All of a sudden, that gives me hours and hours more gardening time, since I can park my little hand tiller for most things. (Like 10 or 12 hours of initial garden prep.) Next I want a mower for it, and a little front end loader...the possibilities boggle the mind. What's your best timesaving thing?

I just played with my new Mantis tiller yesterday. I was tilling up lawn for my new lily bed. Sure beat digging with a shovel. I know that I will have to mulch it up several times, but it was sure alot easier. I belive it will be money well spent.

For reasons unfathomable to normal people, the tiled sunken tub (circa 1983) had a short wall on the outer edge ... just studs ... with wire, a thick mortar bed, and the tile. Needless to say, there was nothing left of that wall but a few shreds of rotted wood. None of the tile had any kind of backer board; the studs behind it were throughly rotted out in a few places. No membrane in the pan, either. No wonder we had a mold problem! New stuff has cement board, waterproof joint compound, gaudy pink stuff (Kerdi?), a black membrane in the base, and porcelain tile on top of it.

When we moved 7, 8years ago, i took the opportunity to thin out the toys. The original owner, a single mother, put in a downstairs back room baking kitchen for extra income. We use it as a project room and pantry so i still have all the toys but none of it is upstairs in the main kitchen. It has been nice to just have the basics and my favorites. No appliances like a toaster, microwave, or any counter clutter. Wanted to go back to the basics of chopping by hand, cooking fresh and rustic. No plastics, glass fridge storage pyrex, etc. Oh, sure, it all finds its way back up every once in a while but i do a 'sweep' once a month or so and back it goes. My drawers are no longer junky and stuffed. My favorite things i remember when i moved... -all fresh new spices, one set was a gift -treated myself to good cooking oils and vinegars -2 new big cutting boards,(even though i have a dozen misc ones) -restaurant quality water kettle and coffee grinder -fresh new pot holders and kitchen towels. I've always had good knives and cookware, cast iron all sizes and enameled cast iron, all sizes. No longer use non-stick anything. 2 appliances most used and loved that have easy accessed under counter storage... Breville juicer and Blendtec blender. So worth the high cost for quality. I never wanted a kitchen aid since i don't bake but found one at a yard sale last year for 15$. Finding many uses for it now that i have one. (it had a loose screw in the housing that made it run with a gruff rumble, brand new and fixed with-in minutes of bringing it home) -yard sales are still a favorite way to add something 'new' without the sticker shock. Like triciae, i always have something collected from years of traveling like a pot or bowl with something fresh from the garden or a vase with flowers from the yard. A few weeks ago it was sunflowers...last week it was a leggy purple cabbage and chives, this past weekend i treated myself to a small rosemary tree.

@totoro z7b Md I love that trellis, probably my favorite one I've seen! The homage it pays to bees is awesome and it looks great too. It's not new, but I again leaned on it very heavily this season: my Root Slayer shovel. If you live in an area with dense clay soil and are planting in areas where shrubs and trees used to exist, it is a life saver. I have lent it to 3 or 4 of my (struggling) neighbors and every single one of them at the end of the day tells me what an amazing tool it is. It has saw-like blades on either side, and tip is another blade with an inverted point that forces the root toward the middle and then cuts it on the two sides. I bought the set of 3 and all 3 have been incredibly useful. And extremely well-made. The amount of leverage force I have placed on this shovel while digging up stumps is incredible and it hasn't broken. I like the baby version of the large one for planting 3-4 inch pots. Big one for shrubs, trees, and larger perennials. The wider/shortest one helped to tear up a ton of sod (I have very very little grass left in my yard, haha). It's also a great edging tool. This was honestly the best garden tool purchase I have made. That, and my Gorilla Cart wheel barrow, which is far, far, far easier to use than a conventional wheelbarrow!

Annie -- Re: Your funny tale. A friend and her DH were driving through a small town in Spain when her prior night's dinner began creating an urgent situation. They stopped at a prosperous looking house and she rang the doorbell. My friend begged to be shown to the 'bathroom'. The friendly homeowner proudly showed her to a beautiful tiled room with a huge bathtub. Thankfully, my friend's distress became obvious, and the owner realized what was required before disaster struck. (I was less surprised about the confusion over the euphemism than that the homeowner would open her home to a couple of American tourists.) Since hearing that, I have made it a point to inquire for the 'toilet' instead of 'lavatory' or 'bathroom' (or WC). It certainly seems more *adult*.

Sazzyrose, did the Mantis till up the sod easily? My parents are looking at buying one after they viewed the video, and are wondering if they're really as good as they claim? And are they easy to start?

Laurie, Nothing works like the advertisments, you know that. It took a bit of time, but it did chew away pretty good. It did get plugged up with grass a few times, but it's easy enough to remove. As for previous tilled garden soil, wow. It works the soil wonderfully. My garden was quite neglected last year because I sprained my back and I didn't get anyone to come in last fall to till it up with a tractor like usual so the soil is quite packed. But the mantis works this up like a charm. As far as starting, a couple pulls and away it goes. It doesn't sound like a mulcher, but more like a chain saw. I am quite happy with this product overall. I'm thinking that My ground was a little to wet under the grass when I first started tilling. I have let it sit a couple days and then tilled it again. It did dig deeper. In a couple days I'm going to go over this area again. Hope this helps your parents make their decision.

My DH bought me a birthday present last November that I almost forgot to get out and try - it's a little B&D handheld cordless edge trimmer. It's like a tiny hedge trimmer but the blades all stick out the front. He got it on sale because it was the fall. I wasn't sure if I would use it much but now that I have tried it, I really love it for tidying up around the edges of the lawn!

It's no rototiller or lawn tractor... LOL

I love my lit' Mantis too Shelley, never thought of using it to chew up sod...I'll have to see if it works.

Sharon, on the video, the Mantis chewed through a piece of plywood! Then, I suppose logically, it should go through sod like a hot knife through butter!LOL
