Just like to say Hi and a few questions.

Hi

I've been lurking for a year now, and I thought it was time to register and say hello.I've wanted to grow figs for a long time now, and last spring was my second attempt. I tried a potted fig tree, over ten years ago but I killed the poor thing.

Last year I bought three fig tree's online. I have a 15" Brown Turkey,a 15" celestial and a 40" Chicago Hardy. I planted them in the spring of 2007. I'm getting ready to take the winter cover, off of my tree's any day now.

I read somewhere that miracle grow was ok for fig trees, and that I should apply it in the spring.

Here's my Question's

1 On the average, how manny years will it take, for me to get fruit, from my tree's? I did a search, but the results were not very specific.

2 How much and how frequent should I apply fertilizer ?

Some trees give a couple of fruits the first year. However, if your trees were reluctant last year, you should see some this year and for sure a lot more next year if all ambients are normal.
Fertlize, if you have to, after the plants start showing active growth wether Miracle-Grow or other. I have seen other mentioning MiracleGrow use for figs. Fertilize only when the soil is moist. If the soil is not moist, pre-moist the soil by watering first and then fertilize. Frequency of fertilizing depend on your soil really. Some people with ground planted figs do not fertlilize unless sandy soil where the nutrients leach away with fast flow of water.

hey Ralph, last year i bought 1 chicago harty and 1 mission from logees. each was about 3 inches of good wood with a few full size leaves and lotsa roots in 2 inch pots, shiped awake. when i got them they were small but looked nice since they were not dormat. i mxed a small amount of triple phosphorus with some organic manure and repotted them. i was able to get about a good solid foot of groth with nice close nodules and about 12 figs on each and ate mabe 3-4 from each.everyday i soaked them at night. i live in NY.and was very pleased. here is a website with another opinion for fertalizing. Yuck, I'm back. How miserable to come back to 15 degrees and 6" of snow, in March yet! I was happily surprised to see that most of my brug seedlings are fine. My larger plants are another story. They are completely covered with aphids and I just finished stripping all the foliage. The bad news is my Vulc. It looks almost dead and I'm not sure what happened. I'm going to cut it way back and see what happens. I just can't get over these cold temps. This is the coldest March on record here. I'm flying back to FL on the 26 of the month for another week. This time it's just going to be me and my youngest so DH and the older kids can water the plants for me. I'm also hoping that the temps will be considerable warmer here by then so I can ship plants back home. I found some gorgeous passies while there but it was too cold to mail anything, even overnight. I have a bunch of extra Murraya paniculata (orange jasmine), pink oleander and yellow allamanda seeds if anybody wants some. I have some other seeds as well but have no idea what they are. One looks like a small weeping bottle brush (hot pink) and the other I have no idea because I just got pods and don't know what the flowers look like. I'll have to post pics for an ID. There were a couple brug trees that were just spectacular. They were trees, big trees! I'm sure they've been there for ages but I never noticed them before. A good bit of the landscaping at my Mom's was destroyed in the hurricaines 4 years ago and her fruit trees are gone. Since there's rarely anyone at her place she can't have elaborate hard to care for plants. Last week was the first time in 2 years that anyone had been down there. If I lived there full time I could have the most beautiful gardens. Wishful thinking. lol You can pick up real estate for nothing there. We were looking at a couple places in West Boca. Everything is in forclosure there. Even people that have paid off their mortages are losing their homes because they can't afford the property taxes and homeowners ins. We went to dinner with a friend who specializes in selling forclosures and it was so tempting. If my kids were older or younger I'd move in a heartbeat but they don't want to relocate. Can you tell that I really don't want to be home in the cold? lol

David welcome back. I do hope that this time around you will not get sick when you have to move the plants in. I would love to look at your pictures. Old or new....I LOVE pictures. Especially to compare how things change from season to season. Could you post a link to your site? Thanks Crossing my fingers for you that you will see NHDP and AT with a flush before wintertime. OH I did check the seeds for germination before I got rid of them. I try not to be to ditzy....LOL Frances of course you know since I go by Fran it is short for Frances too. Gosh I dislike my name....but I guess I am stuck with it. Geez Louise, I like anything and everything that blooms. When we moved here there were only two little boxwood type plants flanking the front doorsteps, a red rose bush which I trimmed becuz it had be badly neglected and a surprise pink peony bush that was it except for a apple tree, 3 oaks and a couple of wild growing walnuts trees. My prized plants are in buckets. I don't plan on planting them here, however I have extras of some things that have planted and will leave behind when and if we move again. Ya'll know how us gardeners must leave a piece of us behind. Frances, I appreciate the offer, if there is anything you have you would like to share I would accept (she says with a grin) I get giddy over receiving things in the mail...lol. I am afraid to post for anything on the seed exchange, ppl tend to get testy when you post PLEASE HELP...lol.
