snails and slugs

What do you use for these slimmy little critters.Have a dog and cat so need some natural remedy.I have tons of scapes but not one bloom yet.P.S.to many to pick off by hand.HELPPPPPPPPP soon. PAT.

slug bait! yep iorn phosphate slug bate it's asfe for pets and stops slugs and snails from eating.

Iron Phosphate (sold in garden centers under Slug Bait/Slug Gone etc.) does work the best IMO. However you can also trap them by putting beer in a saucers or inch deep deli containers. They will crawl in and drown in the beer.

Ah, well. I searched for copper but didn't have any matching titles here. I'm interested in no-effort solutions because my mom is too busy to tend to her garden, otherwise she would do it herself already. She tried coffee and crushed eggshells. It didn't work but I'm not sure if it's because she did it once and didn't follow up. She also used the beers sometimes, then forgot about it. She's just busy. So the solutions that would require her to reapply it is out of the question because the slugs and snails will just bounce back when she stops. I'd like to set up the copper (if not wire, mesh?) all around her garden, and take care of the predators myself inside the garden with baits, etc a few times until they're gone, then let it be. But my mom won't go for it if it isn't effective even if I offer to buy it myself. She's grown suspicious of the claims by companies about the insects. Such like that sonic wave machine that supposedly drive the spiders and/or mosquitoes away by creating sound frequency they don't like. She got it and it didn't work. I'll continue to research it when I have time. EDIT: I heard copper will repel snails, is this true? I was a little disappointed to learn that the banana slugs weren't repelled by her copper. I'm not sure if it's because her copper is too small or poorly designed. We have numerous banana slugs around here, and they're main problem for my mom's garden. Slugs are huge here. LOL, Teresa--I think you might be right--if that one got through the "scrutiny" of what's appropriate or not, the "Mexicali Slug" should be able to slime it's way through as well!LOL But--I think I'll try to follow the "rules"! :o) janice BTW--Thank God (can I say that?) my husband is very affirming and loving and would never try to de-feminize me in that way or risk making me feel less than wonderful! I wonder how any man would feel being "scrutinized" and assessed according to his physical "attributes" or lack and deficit thereof? Sad!

I feel your pain! FWIW, Home Depot, et al. sell a slug & snail bait that really works for me - made from iron phosphate & non toxic to us & our pets, it supposedly breaks down into fertiliser. You just sprinkle it around the area you want to protect & the molluscs eat the bait rather than your plants & then they DIE!

This is not a spray. It is a very thick, sludge-like liquid that you apply to the garden as a drop here and there, only on the ground. You do not put any of it directly on the plant. The 4% metaldehyde is very effective at getting rid of slugs, the liquid sticks around for long time, and you only need to apply it a few times a year. Honestly nobody needs a whole case of this stuff. It is not that easy to apply and it is easily spilled so if you are going to go with metaldehyde to kill slugs I would look for the Deadline MP, blue mini-pellets. Those also have 4% metaldehyde and you can spread that a lot easier - we use the pellets at a rate of about 2 to 3 pounds per acre in spring, summer, and fall. The blue pellets are safe to use, just make sure you store the bag away from animals as it is toxic if they eat it out of the bag. You apply at a rate of 4 or 5 pellets per square foot so that isn't enough to be attractive to dogs or other large animals and the blue color isn't attractive to birds. I have a few bottles of the liquid that I only apply as needed in the summer around areas that are badly infested, and I probably won't ever run out of it since I barely use much. Hope that helps. A mixture of ammonia and water is a spray bottle, will kill them. Use one to one mixture.

I have wondered, does the slug bait kill toads if they eat the slugs? I hate the slugs but love my toads.

Sluggo and Worry Free which are iron phosphate baits are supposed to be safe for wildlife, pets and children.

Toads LOVE slugs! I don't & won't use any kind of slug bait or other poisons here, so I feel so lucky that this place is full of toads (and frogs).

I agree, I don't want to take a chance with my toads. I feel like when they say wildlife they aren't including frogs, toads and snakes.

The weaker the ammonia solution , the longer it takes to kill the slugs. It only takes a small amount of spray to kill the slugs.

I use the ammonia solution also.......I find it very effective on slugs and snails. I carry the spray bottle with me, in my utensil bucket, anytime I am in the garden. I spray with no worry about damaging any flower including daylilies. I will even spray it right down into the crown if I see newly hatched slugs down in there. Never had any damage from the ammonia/water mixture. I use about a 1 part ammonia to 4 parts water, but it's always a guess, doesn't have to be exact.

I grow most all my cultivars in pots and know from bitter experience that the slugs and snails can cause a lot of damage. I now use the bait on a regular schedule and the spray of ammonia/water when needed.
