Remember the Globe Amaranth? LOL

I did a topic asking you all to identify this plant for me and someone told me that rabbits love Globe Amaranth. We live in the country where there are a lot of rabbits.

Yesterday I finished my planting except for the Amaranths, which I sat on the front porch near the door so I'd remember to get them in the ground. It's a big porch with two steps.

This morning I went out to check my girls to see how they all did overnight. I turned around to check on the Amaranth, and they were GONE.

I had a six pack of them, still in the plastic container. The whole shebang was gone. Not a leaf or a piece of dirt was anywhere! I looked in the front part of the yard and couldn't find the plastic container.

It took the WHOLE thing! Do you think it was a rabbit? We get a lot of armadillos, possums, etc. Whatever it had, it has a big mouth!

I'm glad I woke up in a good mood. lol. I think it's funny! But darn they were pretty plants, and I was really looking forward to growing them. :(

So sorry for your loss! After reading your first post on the Globe Amaranth, I found a flat of them at one of my favorite nurseries and tried to imagine them filling up a whole bed. Still might go back and buy them, $9 for a flat of 48 I think.
I suppose when I decide to, they will have been sold.

Anyway, one good thing came of your experience, you inspired me! Darn critters.

That is crazy!! How would a rabbit haul them away? Maybe they organized and each lifted a corner of the container....What would have happened to the plastic? Did they bury the evidence? Eat the whole thing? Weird!!

Lovely! My zinnias are volunteers that have been coming up for several years. This year they are only about 10" tall, because of the lack of rain. I have pinched the first flower buds, so they will branch out, but they are so small!!

Hi Holly! :) It isn't working well for the space. I would like to go w/ something columnar and deciduous. I've "lived w/ it" trying to decide for a year and I always want it to be somewhere else. LOL Time for it to find a new place! :)

Hi TKHooper, This is where Latin names are important. Globe Amaranth is Gomphrena globosa. Amaranth is Amaranthus of which there are various species Amaranthus tricolor, Amaranthus caudatus, etc. So though they have a common nickname, they are not the same genus. And it usually safe to assume because of that that the seeds will look different. Sometimes even within the same genus of plants, the seeds will vary species to species. Like salvias, sometimes they are round, sometimes they are oval. The color can vary greatly too. Anyway, back to the original question, The seed is in the fuzzy cocoon part. I've not tried to take them out of the fuzzy part, but they probably are oval as you have found. Probably more than you wanted to know, lol Remy

I just did not like the red rose on Knightly's dress and I hope she was giddy out of embarrassment. All the discussions with her revolved around her pregnancy. She should GET MARRIED first and worry about award shows next year! Sandra's hair was horrid. The bangs in the face thing wasn't working for her. I am so glad I was not seeing the ratted, teased buns the teens are wearing at school. '60's Bee Hive is back and it is AWFUL! I loved that over all, the gals were covering up. The open backs were so sexy!! I hope the lack of cleavage catches on with the High School crowd. We bopped in and out at commercials on other shows we were watching so I was spared much of Ricky's torrents, but he sure got blasted yesterday on the news shows. Good, mean should be OUT.

Do you think maybe some light fingered person made off with them? Or maybe a dog grabbed them to play with and toss around. This has happened to me more than once?

I didn't know rabbits like them. I grew a bunch from seed last year and they were never eaten.
