mulch and insect problems

I did some reading up on squash borers. Various articles stated that certain mulches create protective cover for squash borers and other insects. Types of mulches were not specified. Application of pesticides, organic or chemical, does not penetrate the mulch, thus many pest insects get away unscathed. Mulch can provide beneficial conditions for insect reproduction.

My guess is that the mulches which have bits of wood and other non-decomposed materials are the mulches likely to provide benefit to pest insects. The finer mulches are more expensive, but perhaps well worth the expense in the long run. Something to consider...
