Tom, Sal's EL and Sal's (Gene) are the same--but different from the Sal's Corleone from Belleclare Nursery. I bought a Sal's from Edible Landscaping before Michael decided that they were the same as his Hardy Chicago (I and many others disagree with Michael on this). From that tree I've shared many cuttings, and other people have shared from what they got from me. I have a fuller discription on this page.

I'll second the statement that Herman's Marseilles is difficult to root. I got a couple cuttings last autumn. I stored them until mid-Feb and basically just left them refrigerated. In Feb when I opened the bag I noticed that a couple of the cuttings had white mold on them, so I brushed and sanitized them all. (I even dipped them briefly into bordeaux, something I will repeat henceforth) Marseilles was the only variety I lost (and I cut each cutting in half to improve my chances) and most were lost due to dessication (though only Herman's Marseilles had a re-occurrance of the white mold and only on one cutting) Out of 12+ varieties I have rooted this spring, Marseilles and Sal's were my only losses. (and the Sal's grew shoots which I accidentally broke and they never recovered or rooted) ~Chills

The Spag.Moss is working well for me too. So far with 32 cuttings I have not had one failure. Seven have already been potted in 1 gal. pots and are nice full leafed trees. However, I discarded the baggies method. I'm always looking for the easiest way. I used some discrded store plastic containers that once held bakery or produce goods, etc. Apparently, Martin D. and I both came up with the same idea unknown to each other. I placed the cuttings and SM in these, stacked them up in a corner of the room out of the way that is normal temp during the day and cooler at night for sleeping and waited. In a week or so I'd take a look through the containers without opening to see if there were roots Some root very fast. I prefer to get them out at the first sign of roots or even initials. I then pot them in clear plastic cups in a potting mix with some extra perlite and a little SM around these new roots so I don't break them. In my experiance, these roots in SM were very brittle and if left in the SM containers too long they became tangled and easy to break off. For me the advantages were: No MOLD, no looking for a place to put the baggies, (on top of my fridg? always in the way),no opening/airing the baggies. no looking for a warm spot or worrying about humidity. Your idea of putting the rooted ruttings in peat pots sounds like a good idea too. It sounds like another way to cut out another step in the process. I don't have a Greenhouse or a special workshop so I'm always looking for the easiest process. Thanks for sharing your experience. Peg
