Hardiness -Black marseilles Vs/Sals EL

Does anyone have experience with which of these

are the most hardy?I have rooted these 2 and plan

on putting several in the ground next year(spring of 2011) if all goes well.Thanks!

Both should do fine for you. I have both in the ground in Southern Maryland with no freeze damage.

Me Too:I have both in ground,and except first year when they were very young they did not have any dieback in the last 5 years.
Telling you wich is hardier is impossible for me,because the climate is not enough harsh here to kill any of the 2.
We had -4F extreme cold in the last 10 yrs.

Gorgi, Thanks for the feedback. That is encouraging. Thanks to the evil influences of this group, I am waaaaaaay past a "few" fig trees. One of my newbie New Year's resolutions was to NOT acquire more figs until what I already had started producing. That resolution lasted about as long as it took me to check the new Ebay fig listings. Oh, well. There is always next year. I have a LOT of space but not a lot of soil. I am right on rock ledge, so this location isn't a great candidate most kinds of plants, but I WILL try a few varieties (MVSB, HC, Danny's Delight, etc.)in-ground in a couple of years. As hardy as those varieties might be. I am still concerned that I will have to give them some substantial protection in our - 10 F winters. In one of Herman's postings he stated that the most he gets from a potted fig tree is about 80 figs. (I can go through that amount by myself in a very few days.) How many should I expect from a tree such as MVSB grown in-ground, and assuming I manage to fight off the deer, raccoons, opossums, bears, squirrels,chipmunks, mice, birds and wasps? One more question: Herman noted that trees that had produced heavily the year before they are put in the ground seem to suffer more damage than those that produced modestly or not at all. Has anyone tried removing all fruit the season before they are planted in the ground? C.J.

enigmamachine, I am giving Willis Orchard the benefit of the doubt. I'm giving the trees at least till the end of next summer to decide what I want to do with them.Only then I will know for sure if they've sent me what I ordered. Though, Of the five or six trees I ordered from them last summer ( can't remember, But they're labeled )and even before I registered with both forums. An amateur like myself noticed all but one tree had the same leaves! That's when I had my vibes about them. But like I said, Until the end of next summer I won't know for sure. Till then, I will reserve my comments on Willis Orchard. That should be a fair thing to do. As for giving you anything,I don't have a problem with that but I wish you would have asked a little sooner. Just gave away some cuttings and now I'm at the point to where I can't cut anymore. But I will keep you in mind. These things seem to pop up from time to time. Rafed

Sandy Why not start in pots with the types that will have chance to ripen in Zone 5 after a coupe of years maturity in the pots (near a wall with southren exposure). ejp3 mentioned varieties that ripened some fruits for me last year in the 2nd or 3rd year of their lives. I would also add Natalina to the above list. Go to the site below and order some or all of the above if still available: http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=4541467 Even if you want to try in the ground (and are ready for the labour of love required for covering in winter), it is better to keep the plants in the pots for a couple of years. Enjoy thr fig plants in the pots while searching for methods in the two forums on how to protect your fig plants in the ground in Zone 5 (before you give up on i!).

Thanks gene and herman for your input!That helps me in
planning.I had good luck rooting these varieties
using Dans baggie method insructions plus adding moist Spag. moss in bag which I believe controlled mold and rot.
I am new to all this , but learning a lot from all
on the forum. Thanks again!

I have a sals (genes) in the ground for a few years. I dont cover it and it is going strong with little dieback every year.

and Sals(genes)? I assume none.Did your Corleone get
through this cold spell? I sure hope so.

Tom, Sal's EL and Sal's (Gene) are the same--but different from the Sal's Corleone from Belleclare Nursery. I bought a Sal's from Edible Landscaping before Michael decided that they were the same as his Hardy Chicago (I and many others disagree with Michael on this). From that tree I've shared many cuttings, and other people have shared from what they got from me. I have a fuller discription on this page.
