what kind would be good in container for z 5?

I'm looking to expand my tropical fruit collection to figs. What kind would be a reasonable kind of fig to grow in a container that would have a high chance of growing good decent fruit in a pot in zone 5 Indiana? Preferably one that could be overwintered in a heated garage or basement. But if there is a reliably hardy one that would set fruit and ripen them outdoors that would be really cool too.

That just sounds like too much to ask!

There are plenty. Hardy Chicago, atreano, sals, celeste just to name a few. All defenately in pots and I think if you have a good spot and cover them they should survive in thr ground.

Why not start in pots with the types that will have chance to ripen in Zone 5 after a coupe of years maturity in the pots (near a wall with southren exposure). ejp3 mentioned varieties that ripened some fruits for me last year in the 2nd or 3rd year of their lives. I would also add Natalina to the above list.

Even if you want to try in the ground (and are ready for the labour of love required for covering in winter), it is better to keep the plants in the pots for a couple of years. Enjoy thr fig plants in the pots while searching for methods in the two forums on how to protect your fig plants in the ground in Zone 5 (before you give up on i!).

Indoors about a month ago I sowed Mary Washington asparagus in cells, have about 18 seedlings (ca. 75-80% germination), about 6 to 9 inches tall. Couple pots of parsley and thyme were sown at same time and are couple inches tall. Bought one of those plastic clam shells of organic rosemary for $2.49 and stripped the stems apart and rooted in water. Now I have 9 four-inch baby plants, sure beats starting rosemary from seed and waiting forever. Sowed hot and sweet peppers in cells two days ago, also three varieties of tomatoes (some tom seed was nine years old, but it sprouted OK last year...!) Next on the indoor agenda, maybe: chard, kale, scallions, leeks, bok choy. Also maybe lettuces and spinach. Outdoor garden is covered with a foot of frozen compacted snow here in mid-Hudson Valley, so my unheated enclosed porch will have to be a surrogate for the cool-weather crops.

What varieties are yours foolishpleasure? Chill hours usually happen between 32-45 degrees Fahrenheit. Some Northern Highbush can take temperatures below -20F.While others,like Rabbiteyes and Southern Highbush need a somewhat warmer climate or protection against extreme cold. Each Blueberry plant needs a certain amount of time to rest at the chill temperature and every variety is usually designated with a number of hours. A garage is okay to bring them into during the winter as long as it's under 45 degrees F or yes,they can be covered.Even snow can work.I'd probably use some type of mulch around them also or bury the container in the ground. Hair, the winters here are bad enough. New England is much worse. But you gotta do what you gotta do. I did see a large, beautiful baldcypress at Niagara Falls (Ontario), and the nearby northern red oaks & sugar maples were impressive. Regarding hemlocks & woolly adelgids, the little suckers swept thru here a decade ago, but seem to have disappeared mostly. I was hiking at the drainage of nearby Rocky Gap Park lake where there are some stands of mature hemlocks (100' plus). Some dead skeletons showed, but the majority of them seemed mostly recovered. Nothing like the complete devastation in Md's Catocton park.

Figs and other trees will get large in 5 gallon containers if allowed to root into the ground. But then they aren't really in a 5 gallon container are they. For me watering more than once a day just isn't a schedule that works. No tree will get very big in a 5 gallon container watered once a day in hot weather. It can't, there isn't enough water to allow it to get very big. They can and will get bigger than my fig above. They just don't get out of hand. But don't confuse smallish with lack of production. They can be very productive for their size. For the original poster I say try them in the small pots you seem interested in. It can certainly work. At the worst you pot up or allow rooting into the soil in summer. That will allow a pretty big tree.

as long as you do not try to grow the longer season fig plants you can grow many types in POTS.
Hardy Chicago, Violet de Bordeaux, Dark Portuguese, Ronde, Pastilere,Sals, Marseilles Vs, just to name a few dark types.
Stay away from Madeira,Panache and a few other long season fig plants. Growing in pots and stored in a heated garage will work with those mentioned along wih some others stored in your heated garage.
