My Yellow Double Charter Hollyhocks turned out to be Blood Red!

What a surprise this morning to go out and find them blooming - blood red! I did a double take!

I got the seed in a trade on the Seed Exchange forum a few years ago and they were supposed to be Double yellow Charters.

However, I am very happy with the color.

They exactly match the Don Juan Roses growing nearby.

They just as easily could have turned out to be some odd color that messed up the whole color scheme. I have never seen such a deep red HH.

I had beautiful RED hollyhocks a couple of years ago.

When I planted seeds from them, they came back white! I was so disappointed! That hollyhock looked like a solid RED Christmas tree at one time. It was gorgeous!

I understand about more than one seed in a pot, which would make additional plants. When the sales person at the garden center and I both did a little scratching at one of the other hollyhock plants the stems were in a cupped shape and looked like they came from one root system. I guess the only way to tell for sure is to get another one and take it apart. I planted my last three last evening and forgot to take a photo. I think Art is correct, and I don't think I have anything unique, but if they are second year plants, could it be possible that the plant last year was polinated by a busy bee that visited several colors of hollyhocks? If I get another pot of the mixed colors I will definitely take a photo, and more than likely remove at least some of the soil to check deeper. I will let you know what I find. Thank you. Jane

I agree that Hollyhocks are easy from seed. In fact, they're perfect for winter sowing. I'm always cautious about saying my seeds will grow into such-and-such a color because I grow several different kinds, and I've always thought that meant the seeds produced would probably have unpredictable colors. Although I've noticed many of my hollyhocks reseed, the plants are more vigorous when I start them by seed, so I usually pull the plants out when they start to look raggedy. I've still got a few blossoms, but most of the flowering is finished for now, unless the plants surprise me with repeat bloom later. kate8, I'd be glad to share some seeds with you. Just send me an e-mail with your address. Surprisingly, I haven't had a problem with rust, but leaf miners can be a problem and whatever the critter is that turns the leaves to doilies.

Alcea rugosa (Russian Hollyhock) is simply THE BEST Hollyhock. Like you said, it is completely resistant to rust, aphids, and other nasty things. I can not stress enough how wonderful it is. If you have not had luck with Hollyhocks before you must try this one. My old neighbor had one of these in front of their shed in full sun. It got four feet wide and probably seven ft. tall or more. The yellow blooms are beautiful, and the foliage is more devided than the regular round leaves of normal Hollyhocks. Theirs must have produced babies from the main plant because it bloomed every year. I just bought one this year. Gorgeous and not fussy. Its still pretty small though, as it is in a particularly neglected site. I should get much bigger next year, and even more beautiful. CMK

I love some surprises. Others ruin my plans. And collecting seeds is no guarantee that you'll get what you want. Trading is certainly a gamble.

It may be cross pollination at work. HH cross very readily. I used to have some very nice colors, but they have all turned into some variation of lemon yellow. Who know what this year will bring.

Poppies are the same. Mine are starting to bloom and I am seeing lots of very different ones from what I had last year.
I always tell everyone I give seeds to that the color and type can be very different from the mother plant.

gldnol1, I'd LOVE lemon yellow HH. I bought some yellow seed from a company and either they haven't bloomed yet or they're all pink by mistake.

I've had such a bad year with rust I've stripped off most of the leaves on my HH. I spray lime/sulfur in winter for the roses, but there must have been enough spores in the mulch to really go to town on the HH.

remontant, these started life as alcea rugosa from White Flower Farm. The are a more bushy type HH. I will take a picture when they are in good bloom and post. If you want, I will be happy to save seeds and we can keep our fingers crossed they turn out true.

Yes, hollyhocks are very variable. My MIL always had all sorts of colours in her previous garden from self seeders. I have one I grew from seed from a yellow flowered plant I saw in a local garden but it hasn't bloomed yet so I'll have to wait and see. BTW 'Chaters' (no 'R') William Chater was a nurseryman in Essex, England in the 19th century who specialised in hollyhock breeding.

I took a more careful look today and did find one of the yellow HH I planted from seed. The flowers are a very washed-out yellow, however, like they thought about being yellow but ran out of energy at "cream."

Boy do I know how ya'll feel. I purchased a Cajun Hibiscus
at a garden show the name "Red beans and rice" a beautiful
red with yellow markings. I just had to have. Well I
watched over it all winter, and found just the spot in the
garden for it this spring. Last week I noticed a single
bud. Boy was I excited. I was outside eating lunch with
my DH and grandson, when the bloom caught my eye. On
further investigation I could see a beautiful flower, but
no where near the color it was supposed to be. Oh well,
maybe I'll try again this October when the garden show
returns. I couldn't even find a match on the Cajun hibiscus
web site. Oh well all a part of gardening. Keep
those hands dirty.

I started some new HH's this year, too. One variety is an apricot double (can't recall the name) and the other variety is has single & semi-doubles called "Indian Spring" in crimson, pink, rose, yellow & white - both varieties are supposed to bloom the first year. Can't wait to see them in bloom. Just trying to figure out where to plant them so they don't cross.

One thing that makes the blood red one so special to me besides the color is that the blooms are deeply cupped with bright green centers.

Annie, your HHs are wonderful!! I try every year to grow them and it seems like the rust is worse and worse. Does anyone have any suggestions that might help? One of my grandmothers always had hollyhocks and I would love it so much if I could keep some healthy enough to bloom! I planted yellow double chater too, but they are down to about 3 or 4 leaves left. Help!! Debby

chickenmom-I hear ya! I SO wish that my hollyhocks had survived. I think the problem for mine was some fungus, due to too much moisture.

A couple of years ago. I had abeutiful stand. It was around the gaslight. At the end of the walk. They eventually died!! I have some. Though There surrounded by blackeyed susans. Do they need a lot of space? The ones I have aren't growing as well as those pink ones I had. What's the trick!

Compost, compost compost!
I don't fertilize them.
Don't water them very often. Give them a good, deep drink occasionally, but let them dry out completely before you water them again. They don't like soggy soil. Soggy soil introduces diseases and fungus. Don't get tap water on their leaves (I have well water, so no chlorine).
Also, they need a lot of space for good air circulation.

Annie, I visited your album and loved everything. That red hollyhock is the truest red I have seen. They are all beautiful. I am impressed by how healthy they all are. I have some difficulties with them here.

This is such a good time of year for the gardens. Keep posting those pictures and I will keep visiting.
