ahh....a good days work..

I had a day off work today and I spent it doing gardening..worked at it from about 9 am until ten till 9 tonight,only stopped for a 20 min lunch, and man O man am I beat tonight..but it is a rewarding beat....I got soooooooo much done.... planted some of my winter sown seeds, moved a small fence, hung hooks in my new shade house, pulled lots of weeds, planted some shrubs. Potted and planted lots. A local landscaper pulled up ranks and closed shop here and headed to Texas to start over due to bad economy here. His loss, my gain. I got 28 shrubs in two or three gallon pots, plus 3, 3 gallon pots of stellas, two, 3 gallon grasses and two, two gallon grasses. In the 28 shrubs I got 15 knockout roses. Two Miss Kim lilacs, 2 spirea, one golden, 2 burning bushes, a cute little yellow everygreen and a few more I cant remember offhand. But rambling aside..about half are planted now. A small new bed put in...a darn good gardens day done...now..if I can only limp to bed..

Wow, you did good!!! And all those new shrubs and plants. A great addition to the garden. Lots of work but it is all going to look so nice.

Ponydoc: Of course, we are Tress fans here. He's the real deal. I knew Terry Hoeppner and his wife, Jane, really well when he was coaching at Miami. I'm still heartsick over that one. We live in Dublin which must be very near your old haunts at 161 and Riverside. We have been here 12 years which seems crazy! We actually found about 10 acres still within the school system but would have a Plain City addy. The biggest costs are developing the land to be able to build. A septic for our house plans is about 25K!!! Insane! We still have until February to decide if we will buy or not. The contract language gives us 90 days of due diligence time and our lawyer gave us extensive language to have a no fault exit if we decide to. We have to sell our own house first but probably won't get that done before we need to decide on the land. The big iffy part is what we could get for our home. I'm not giving it away just to be able to do this. But do we go ahead and gamble and buy the property anyway??? We can't seem to come to a reasonable conclusion. We have 6 kids so doing any kind of moving or temporary housing will be like getting major dental work done! ( my apologies to all you dentists, but I HATE dental work!) Not much land left in the Dublin area that can be purchased by the individual buyer. Spec building has definitely slowed down. Subs aren't too hard to find right now. I can't afford to use a full service GC so am considering Ubuildit or something like it. I have 2 sons that ride western but don't think I am a good candidate for horse ownership! comfortdog

Sexual abuse, wife beating, inequality of women were always with us and no doubt always will be. Things were different back then, but "better" is open to debate. Nostalgic reminiscing is fun, though. It can depend a bit on your age - where in the old millenium you spent your childhood and formative years. After WWII when the vets came home, married, built or bought a house, started families just about anyone who wanted a job had one. (Not like today!) The future looked promising. Budgeting, saving, paying one's bills and meeting obligations was what people did even if it was difficult... and it often was. We kids played with toys that didn't do all the playing for us; spent a great deal of time outdoors both in the summer and winter. We used our imaginations and learned to amuse ourselves; learned to transport ourselves by opening a book. Hard to believe now that getting the old piece of furniture black & white TV was life changing! Kids today are a lot more cosmopolitan and worldly wise than we ever were, but many are going to be struggling to find a decent job - or a continuous string of decent jobs - and the money to move out of the folk's basement. Even with all the electronic toys, they're not going to have it easy by any stretch of the imagination. Although I had a very pleasant childhood and life, in general, was good, I have no desire to go back.

I solved this problem by putting a pair of metal heron statues in the water of the pond. The real herons think that my pond is already "owned" by those two fake ones, so they fly on to find another spot. (One year I removed the fake ones early, and soon it was occupied by real ones -- eating my Koi fish!)

Thank you for the encouragement, I appreciate it! Summersrhythm, I have never been one to join in the latest fad diet. I’m not really trying to count calories either, mainly trying to include healthier choices, including what are called super foods in my diet. Seems like when some of those foods are part of my diet it’s nature’s way of curbing my appetite, I’m not doing a perfect job at always eating right, but I am striving to try and keep making the right choices and hopefully I will keep losing weight and be healthier. It’s funny, when I was younger, losing weight was more of a vanity thing, now it’s all about my health! I’m not trying to lose weight really fast, just be sensible.

Keesha, I need a nap just from reading your post about all that work you did! LOL!! Holy cow you got a lot done! I hope you got a good nights sleep last night. What a major score on those shrubs and perennials. Nice!

Sounds like you had an amazing day; I'm pretty sure I would fall over halfway through a day like that!

thanks guys. I will post some pictures as soon as we get the last of it planted. I am not going to plant this weekend tho, have company for the weekend for Mothers Day. But by next weekend, I hope to have the remainder in the ground. I have several things to take pictures of when I am done. We are about 90 percent done with a "shade house" that we built out of pallets with a potting bench in it. All thats left is the roof panels but we need a day with no wind to get them home with no broken pieces cuz they are 12 foot long. I have been using the potting bench like crazy already..I am in love with it! I put in a new bed last fall also and it is flourishing, I did not take or post pictures last fall, but I will do so in the next week or two with the other stuff. Thanks for all the great comments and the inspiration this places provides. Love reading posts and looking at the pictures you post.
