hot here too Mary Lu..I am also in zone five...it was near 90..last week it was low 50's :) With Frost.. :) But worst than the heat, the darn humidity was so high you couldn't breathe..worked outside trying to finish a little round cobblestone patio thing but had to quit because we thought we were going to black out from the heat and humidity..we went back out after the sun lowered and almost finished. Supose to be hot all week. I am glad summer is here..but the humidity could go away. It sure does feel like a furnance..good description :)

Pat, it was 93 over here yesterday and the evening ended with severe thunderstorms, lots of lightening, pea sized hail and a tornado. It was right to the north of us as we drove out to the ranch. 7:00 PM and dark as midnight. The tornado wiped out one families place just west of town and took all the out buildings at another ranch north of town. We were driving really fast!! The winds took all the tar paper off the north side of my house and threw it all over the yard in huge pieces. It wasn't quite so hot today, though very humid and the wind was a nice tolerable breeze all day instead of 35-40 mph. Tonight we are under another severe storm watch. I sure hope I don't have to go downstairs in that dark dank cellar that I'll have to go outside to get to. I don't have a single candle here. Ugh!

Memo, get yourself some candles! Or a flashlight! I know what you mean. I don't have to go outside to get to the basement, but down through a trap door in the floor. It is also an old stone basement. But hey, at least we have one, right? I always keep extra batteries for the flashlights and for the radio. Never hurts.

I also have lots of candles around the house. Had to use them not too long ago. We lost power one morning early this spring. I had just stepped out of the shower when the power went off. It was still dark out. I sure looked a sight when I went to work. Clean but not pretty!

Haha, I thought the title meant literally, which I did today. I'm in zone 6 as is my mother, and she had frost last night. It damaged several flats of annuals she had waiting to go in. I didn't have frost, but the heater kicked on. It has been a cold and wet spring, with just a few warmer windy days intermixed.

The weather has been crazy here too.

First it was way wetter and colder than usual; I think we are 1.5 inches ahead for the year. Had the furnace on for several days to take the chill off. Then Saturday it was 89 and yesterday 91°; turned on the AC and it has stayed on.

I hope to garden today assuming the ground is finally dry enough. I will start very early and quit when it gets too hot!

MeMo, get a kerosene lamp and just leave it down there with matches in a zip loc bag. That is what we do.

Last week was gorgeous here. Probably the best spring week I remember in 15 years! Cool, no humidity, breezes, sunny....then a rain storm and small hail on the Friday and that was it! Humidity is here to stay probably and yesterday it was in the mid-90's in the afternoon. Summer came to Georgia yesterday!

It was hot and humid here yesterday, too - but not quite that hot! I'm not sure exactly how hot it got - high 80's, I'm guessing. We finally broke down and turned on the a/c in the evening so we would be able to sleep - no one in my family sleeps well in the heat. I gave all of the plants a good soaking in the evening, too. I was amazed at how much my new hydrangea kept soaking up!

Otoh, the kids had a blast with their squirt guns with the neighborhood kids. Then, one of the moms got creative. They have a tractor with a small wagon, and they loaded all the kids on it with their squirt guns plus a big thing of water, and went around the block squirting everyone they saw! Then one of the teens went after them with a water gun on his skate board!

It's a little cooler here. The thermometer says it got down to 23 F last night. I'm glad I haven't put out any tomatoes, yet. I did buy a bunch of tomatoes and other annuals yesterday, but I'm keeping them in the shed at night. It will probably be cold at night for at least another week or two. The highs are supposed to be in the low 60s this week. We hardly ever have humidity in the summer, but we do have to water a lot!

Dang hot here too. It's 92 right now in the shade of our front porch with a dew point of 70 (that's humid!) I have two biggish projects to work on outside, a tool shed/dog house, and a 14 x 60 hoophouse, but I'm just going to cower in the house until it cools off a little in the evening.

No rain for us either - an unusually warm and dry spring.

Hot hot hot...90's and dry as a bone. Only 20% chance of rain. I am having to drag hoses already. I was so pleased with the weather last week too, as was GGG. We had the same here..only 1 1/2 hrs away. But now...this is awful. I have no hope of planting anything new. I have given up since I refuse to be a slave to the water gods. I want to travel with DH now that he has retired and I am not going to pay to have someone come water and tend...so there goes the new bed I was working on. I am going to mulch it and cover with paper and leave it till Fall. c

Yup, was even hotter here today. At 8 PM tonight it was still 91 with heat index of 98! I sure am falling behind. And the flowers are way ahead. This heat is pushing everything into bloom. The roses will soon all be opening, starting already. I'm just not ready! By the time the roses come into their first flush, I like to have everything planted and all cleaned up. Doubt that will happen this year. On a happier note, I have a lovely bouquet of peonies sitting on the dining room table and took 2 bouquets to work today. My classroom smells lovely!

Even the lawn looks like heck. I had not mowed last week as I knew it was supposed to be dry. But it is so high that now it is going to seed! Oh well, it is green...so that's something. Not all brown and burned up...yet.

You have my sympathy with the heat - here in the north temps in the 90's would be a hot day in July! We're having daytime highs up to high 60's now but at least haven't had frost at night for awhile. It's kinda nice at this time of year when it's still cool enough in the evenings to have a fire in the stove. Cozy.

It rained heavily on Saturday and we even had about 2 seconds of snow! *That* I can live without at this time of year. I think it's now safe for me to plant my annuals as more frost is unlikely.

It's mostly been sunny and great gardening weather here for weeks. I was glad to see the rain on the weekend so we could have a rest from gardening and I didn't have to water all the new plants.

Hope everyone who lives in tornado country stays safe. Sure glad we don't get those here. Scary.

Well, we were missed by the tornados but it was close. A couple of ranches just west of town were hit. One couple lost everything and the next place in line lost all of their outbuildings. Very very sad but thankful it wasn't worse. All the tar paper blew off of the north side of my roof. So the wood was saturated with all the rain. They are re-covering it today and putting on the shingles. Some of the new shingles on the south side blew off as well. They haven't attempted to fix those spots yet. I picked up buckets of nails that they had left sitting up there. The buckets spilled the nails all over the yard so I picked up as many as I could find. I also picked up all kinds of new shingles they had left up there and all the torn hunks of tar paper. All the new shingles that blew off yesterday, I just left laying as it was raining most of the day. I'll be happy when all this work is done on the house!
The insulation guy was here today to look everything over. The next round of work will be mostly done from the inside. Gee, I can hardly wait! LOL!

I turned hot here too, but I am glad of it. My vegetable garden needed the furnace turned on!

Now, the squash plants are coming out of their "too chilly" slump and the broccoli plants took off and are growing fast all of a sudden. The bush beans are blooming, as are the potato plants. Pepper and tomato plants are starting to set fruit. The pole beans are up that I planted just last week, and the lettuces appeared over night.
Grapes are coming on all the vines (including wild grapes in The Little Wood) and the roses are going to town! Soon the Garden Phlox, Daylilies and all the heat-loving plants will be in full swing.
The part I don't like about this heatwave is the salty sweat running down my face into my eyes, burning like heck!

The little girl in me loves to play in the sprinkler and garden hose when I get hot. Wheee!

Now I will be able to get all the old metal lawn chairs repainted. They dry in ten minutes when it is hot and dry.

Sorry to hear about tornado damage. We get hurricanes here but I'll take those any day over tornados. I don't know how people do it.

First day to put the air conditioner in for the summer. Vegetables could use the heat here too. We're in the 90s today too.
