Woo Hoo! White Butterfly Ginger!

I finally found a nice clump of white butterfly ginger. Nell has me so wanting to try it out. Carolyn--Tomar Nursery (North Columbus) has 5 pots of it.

Nell or others...I'm confused over where to plant it. I've read where it likes a little shade. One of the guys recommended that I try it near the edge of my woodland garden. What do you guys think?

Glad you found one, someone generously traded with me, so I have one, too.
Accordiing to the popular VA bulb sellers' catalog, Butterfly lily's natural habitat is the edge of the forest where there is lots of light and moisture.

They go on to say that their best bloom is in their full sun garden with ample moisture.
I planted mine in full sun with lots of mulch and am trying to remember to give it water regularly.

That's what I've read, too, Nell...at the edge of a woodland. But I thought I'd read your past posts that said you had it in full sun. Does your tend to wilt in the heat of the summer?

I still haven't put mine in the ground yet. I keep looking for a "just right" spot.

Jill, Hubby and I were just talking about the Ladies right now! In fact, it seems like they have taken to flying up our street htis past week...we just got back from brunch and a number of them were fluttering by. :) I've been raising the Painted Ladies in my classroom and sent home an egg with almost each child a week ago. Then, this past Thursday, I sent home a 3rd instar larva with those who wanted one. I've had a number of parents either call or come in to ask questions about 'taking care of the baby caterpillars.' It is really exciting that the entire families are getting involved with the butterflies. :)

Sure seems like I spent most of my life in the Rockies bumping into Urtica diorca while involved in one activity or another, not just while rearing lepidoptera on it. Believe it or not, your fingers do get used to it if you are spending the day wild collecting eggs or larva and you learn to just ignore it. Could be Vanessa atalanta (RA) or Aglais milberti (MT) on your nettles, but not Adelpha bredowii (CS). The later uses Quercus (oak) for the larval food plant. Speaking of Urticaceae (the nettles), some of you may or may not know that the primary host for Vanessa tameamea (Lepelepe or Kamehameha) in Hawaii is Pipturus albidus (Mamaki), which is a nettle that doesn't have the urticating hairs common on most of the wild nettles on the mainland. A project I had always wanted to do and just never got around to was establishing Mamaki in my gardens and seeing if the local nettle feeders would use it on their own naturally. Might be a fun project for any of you who live where you can provide the right conditions for Mamaki. A way to raise the nettle feeders without the sting maybe.

hello well the seeds are on their way back, I got an envie from Gray there was no gardenweb name so I'm not sure who this was but I got tem and swaped out your seeds and they went out with the rest this morning. please try to post when you get them, everyone got more seeds than what you sent with the one exception of some one that asked for less seeds back. thanks again for those that donated seeds for the swap, they were appritiated. have a great thanksgiving if I don't get back before then BIG HUGGGG to everyone michelle ps caterwallin - my monarch finaly hatched but it was very cold and raining that day, so I put him on some fresh flowers(don't ask where I had to go to get them) and the next day he would not fly so we kept him in the house the a few more days and he still would not fly, finaly yesterday I found him dead in the flowers I got for him. so I think there was something wrong with him from the start. but he realy had no chance of migrating this late.

It is like a butterfly ginger. I grow mine in part shade, high shade, dappled shade. It is an easy keeper here. It is also called Red butterfly ginger sometimes, but mine isn't exactly red. Janie

I have mine up against the east side of the house planted beside the water faucet and a/c condensation line for moisture. It gets morning sun, then shade starting at 1:00pm. It gets about 5 feet tall in my garden, so I've put a support on it this year to keep it from leaning out toward the sunshine.

I put a cutting of it out front on the southwest side surrounded by shrubs and tall perennials in the moist (when no drought) area at the bottom of a slope. I'll see if that's too hot or not. It's easy to divide once you can cut off 8" sections of root.
