Blue Himalayan Poppy Germination!

I've got 5 peat pots with the poppy germinated! I got seeds on eBay, put them in the freezer for a week. I was very diligent about the peat pots not drying out. I made sure they were moist at all times! They were outside in a semi-shade location. This was my third pack of seeds. I hope they get bigger and make it! If they don't make it, I am going to just buy a plant. I just love a challenge! This was one too :o)

Girl, there's no doubt about it you've got a green thumb. I just bought Meconopsis sheldonii, it's said to be a little easier to grow than betonicifolia, I shall try very hard not to kill it, maybe I'll luck out be able to collect some seed and give it a try.

Some morning sun and afternoon shade is good for any variety - even here, afternoon summer sun can be a bit too intense for them. And they like a richly organic, well-draining soil that stays consistently moist (not wet). Good luck!! I've tried many varieties many times and the best I could do is consider them as exotic (and expensive!) 'annuals' :-) Except for Meconopsis napaulensis, which doesn't flower for several seasons, then promptly croaks as soon as it does. And isn't blue.

Whoo Hoo! I am thrilled for you! :) I am going to try again one day. Every time I see a pic of those beauties I swoon and sigh . . . aaahhh, I WANT some, too!

I guess some seeds just like to hang out in the freezer for a while. They need the chill to germinate. I didn't chill the first two packs. I had the same thing happen with my Milk Chocolate Foxglove. No luck germinating until I put the seeds in the freezer. There is also only 20 seeds in a poppy pack, so I guess I'm not doing that bad after all. (Even the seeds for these are expensive.)

Unfortunately, if you want them to be a perennial, you can't let them bloom the first year. If they all make it, I think I will let some bloom though, and save a couple. Then I will have seeds to share with all of you!

Those are beautiful flowers - Congratulations! I know how difficult poppies can be to grow from seed... believe me.
