Well, you can look it up at Tinker's, or you can try my technique:

Find a wishbone shaped branch or bend a coat hanger into a wishbone shape. Lightly hold each end with your thumb and first finger of each hand, letting the tip point downwards. Walk around the plant 6 times and then turn around 3 times. Stop and face the plant...if it is a tet, the tip will raise up and point straight up. Easy as pie.

Now that Wade has pulled your leg, I will try to help. If you don't know the names of your plants, you can't look them up. You will have to get a named dip and tet and try crossing them to see what sets pods with your plants. Even that isn't fool proof because your plants might not set pods.

If you have a microscope, you can check the pollen with a reticule in place and count the pollen grains plus the shape of the grains will also give you a clue.

First, can you ask the grower/hybridizer what their ploidy is?
If not, do you have any registered plants, both tets and dips that you can use to test the unknown plants? If you do, then number the unknown plants and very carefully, cross pollinate them with both dip and tet plants. Seed pods will usually form in both instances but will only mature and produce viable seeds if the ploidy of both plants match. Air pods, those with no viable seeds in them, usually fall off in about two to three weeks. Get out early before the bees get into the pollen. Any flowers that look like something has scattered the pollen, don't use for your tests. After pollinating a flower, take a small piece of clear mending tape and fold it over the end of the pistil to protect it from insects. If you keep good records, then after about 5-6 weeks, you should be able to tell which is which.

Highjack and Xokientx thanks you very much for the constructive information, I don't have a microscope but I will do the other suggestions you made.

Something that I learned after about 5 years of trying. Be sure that you know the Dip or Tet you are going to use as pollen is fertile. Believe me, it will save a lot of time. Been there, done that way too many times. I thought at first if the plant had big fat fluffy pollen it just had to be fertile, WRONG! I wasted so much time. If you don't know if one you have is fertile or not, just ask, someone on here will probably know unless it's a rare one. Hope this helps, Mona

They are probably tets and you might have pollinated them in the sun. Dips are not as common these days. I bet you bought seedlings from the grower and they were most likely tets. Anyway, the ploidy really doesn't matter...I doubt that is the reason you didn't get any seeds. Try growing the pod parents in pots and keeping them in shade, or rig up some temporary shade. If they are dips you would have seeds...it is unlikely you did not get any accurate ploidy in your crosses.

Mona yes that does help, good point. Think I'll start with good old Ed Brown and Ida's Magic for the tets and I'm not sure what I have in the dips, I'll have to go through last years frozen pollen and see what I have and look over my list of dipa to see who might be the most fertile. That is a good point that Mona makes.

The average success rate for tet crosses is only around 40%. The hotter it gets, the lower the success rate. So try at least about ten crosses for each tet and it would be good to use more than one. Ed Brown and Ida's Magic would be good choices. Failure to set a pod and make seed does not determine anything. Only those crosses that successfully set pods and have viable seed are meaningful.
