tell a dip from a tet---how do you do it

I have several beautiful clumps of daylilies that I purchased from a grower/hybridizer that were in the field, they had no name or info about them at all. I am now trying my hand at crossing some of these beauties but last year I had no sucess. I know that the very expierenced growers can pretty much tell by the look of the plant, leaf size, shape, but I am not expierenced enough for that.

So here's my question. For those of us that are new or somewhat expierenced can you pro's give us any tips on how to tell the difference if there is nothing known about the plant at all other than it is a daylily? Can you tell us how you tell the difference or what works for you and how you do it.

Thanks, Wendy
