Theme garden help: Lake/Beach them

My husband and I recently bought a small cottage on the shore of Lake Ontario. We are converting it to a full time home (putting in a heat source, etc). I do have some cottage gardens I've started this year (and a Hosta garden), but, by chance, I found a rose that prompted me to try a theme garden. This past weekend, I found a Queen O The Lakes rose (subzero). Of course I bought it...but now I am thinking I'd like to create a small theme garden with all the plants having lake/beach/coastal theme names.

The garden gets afternoon sun, on the west side of the Cottage. It will be bordered by a Japanese Quince and a picket fence which will surround our veggie garden (with a chicken wire fence inside to keep the bunnies out). There are some poppies and lily of the valley there now, along with grass. I will probably leave the poppies since I know they don't like to be moved, obviously the grass would be scraped and I have enough lily of the valley-I'll rehome that. There is also a Wegelia (sp) that has been there for years that will stay. We don't really have deer or bunny problems. Our zone is techincally 5, but it is a bit odd because we're right on the lake, it stays cooler longer in the spring (I'm about a 1-2 weeks behind nearby areas for bloom times), and also warmer longer in the fall. Lavender grows well here (actually, pretty much everything does)!

I am looking for suggestions for plants (if you know of a plant-perennial, annual, whatever that has a nautical name, that's what I'm looking for).

I know some Daylilies would work, like Toy Boat and Lake Effect. I also thought about Sea Lavender and Sea Holly, although I'd like to stay with less "sea" or "ocean" and more "lake" or general nautical terms (boat, coast, beach, even cottage).

I do have an informal cottage garden bed in the front of the porch also, this would just be one of many beds.

Seathrift. Does well in dry conditions, as well. I like it best when they are planted close together.

Rosa Rugosa grows all along the Maine coast. I believe it tolerates salt well. I love the smell! Sometimes it's called beach rose or saltspray rose.

Lastly, sea holly.

Both Seathrift and the Rosa sound interesting! I will have to put together a list, then check zones and bloom times to create a a garden plan.

Yellow pattypans would be a great choice if I didn't have such troubles with the SVBs. No peashooters in the summer in this climate. I don't usually use them in the game once I achieve the starfruits anyway. I hadn't thought of peanuts. That's a definite possibility. The whole thing was my 10yo's idea really because this fall when we were putting in the cabbages he commented that we were planting cabbage-pults. :-D

hello well I'm fully into getting ready to move(funny we have not evan listed the house or looked at a new one yet) but I'm going throug 10 years of accumulated stuff and getting rid of much of it. my aim is to get most unnessasary stuff packed and put in storage before we evan list the house. I still need to do some painting and lots of rilly good cleaning. wow I would love to have a house with 3 acres, but we are looking to move to Missouri, about 20 to 30 miles from here, I would like to be much closer to my in-laws farm so I can do much of my gardening there(180 acres should be enough to keep me buisy for a few years) idealy I would like to build a house at the farm but it is over a mile to the nearest house, and I'm not sure I want to be so isolated. well I can't wait to see what I get..... stay warm everyone michelle

Thanks, Everyone for the kind words. DD, I've studied so many of your tablescapes, trying to learn what your secrets are. So praise from you makes my day! Thanks Luvs, I looked at my table again after reading your post and discovered that there is one color I didn't use on my table that was on the bird.......PINK!!! The very next time Eli is here we will get right on it! LOL Nonacook, I am out of space inside now! I've talked myself out of dishes a lot, but sometimes something really grabs you (like these saucers) and DD was there with me encouraging me to get them. I'll blame her! Mo, DH and DS were talking about floating down the river again to fish and DH said they could do it but would need to get the oars off of my table. The only word out of my mouth was "NOT!" Here's a couple ideas for you... The link I'm sending you has your palm trees of many styles for centerpieces. You will love this website-it's full of ideas, etc. On the home page, click on 'theme decor'on the sidebar-when that comes up-click on Tropical/Luau. Don't know how many tables you have to decorate-but you know the bamboo roller blinds? You could get them in narrower sizes & cut them to fit as table runners-probably would get 2 per shade. Another centerpiece idea might be to get the sheets of green styrofoam & cut into 12' squares-1 per table..as the base. Then cut 1/8 or 1/4' wooden dowels as the 'posts' for a tiki hut that would secure into the 4 corners of the styrofoam. You could cover the foam w/silk palm leaves (as flooring) and then use more of the bamboo shade cut & glued on the top of the dowels as the roof of the tiki hut. Then place your sand/shells on the leaves & maybe 1 larger baby. I would surround the styrofoam's edges (either by poking them in or hot glue)..with tiny orchids. I also spoke to my hubby and we might eb moving the theme garden since we split some of our existing hostas over the weekend and ended up with so many splits we started a new hosta garden! Now it needs a companion bed to "even out" that part of the yard (aw, darn-lol) so this might move to a spot that would offer a greater variety of conditions, from full sun transitioning to open shade. Meaning I can add more hostas and other shade lovers! I am on the hunt for the Lake Ontario Hosta now, since I just found it in the registry. The registrar is semi-local, so I tried emailing him (he was/is? on the board of the local Hosta society). This is going to be a bit of a challenge to fill an entire bed without costing myself a fortune, lol. Gotta love plant swaps (got a rosa rugosa-beach rose-at one yesterday, as well as a dover beach iris), hopefully I can get a lot from seed too.

So you must be near Niagara?

Anyway, how about valerian or Jupiter's Beard? I once saw this seascape garden just filled with these plants and grasses. It was breathtaking.
