There is a guy on eBay selling TEXAS EVERBEARING/Brown Turkey cuttings at 4.99 for two cuttings and he is listing 107 lots left.

Talk to local gardeners. I could have gotten a whole truck load of Brown Turkey cuttings from my gardener a few weeks ago. People pay gardeners and tree trimming services to prune their trees and if you ask you may be able to get a whole bunch of cuttings for free.

It would also be in your best interest NOT to get cuttings infected with FMV--Fig Mosaic Virus.

Also, by buying mail-order cuttings, you'll have no idea if they are infected with FMV, or not--unless you find someone scrupulous enough to specify in writing (with a money-back guarantee) that they definitely are not infected. Good luck with that.

And if you later find that they ARE FMV infected, you will still have to hope the seller honors the original agreement, and will return your money. Good luck with that, also.

Best to do what thisisme suggests--locate owners of fig trees in your area, who may wish to give or sell you cuttings. BUT FIRST, if the figs are now dormant--and no doubt they are, in January, even in your area--WAIT until they are in full leaf so you can examine them for FMV.

Or demand the guarantee in writing that I mentioned above, for a return of your money if they are infected. At least the seller will be in your area, where you can shoot him if the figs later prove to be infected and he won't return your money.

Excuse me, did I say "shoot" him? I meant "sue" him. Better than trying to locate someone on eBay who may live in Timbuktu.

Since you are starting an orchard of 200 trees, I'm assuming you DO know how to identify Fig Mosaic Virus. If you don't, I would search it on the internet, or at the library, where you can find pictures of it, so you'll have the information to ID it.

There are plenty of people on this forum who have FMV-infected fig collections, and they may also be able to give you information on its appearance.

Not to seem dismissive, but with little in the way of earnest available testing you shouldn't worry too much about FMV. It's a fact of life. I'll draw more than my fare share of fire on the subject, but the truth of the matter is you probably won't be able to avoid it. The upside is that FMV has variable affects on figs. Even if you get certified FMV free material, there is nothing short of covering your entire orchard to prevent possible contamination and nothing to prove when or where the contamination occurred. SHOOTING/SUEING people will not help in this matter. Anyone smart enough to sell large quantities of plant material should either warn you of the potential for FMV or have you sign a discliamer notifying you of their intent to sell you disease free material regardless of the end result. A well known melon seed seller here in Texas does this with all of their watermelon and cantelope seeds. Since you are located in Texas you might want to try several of the great nurseries in this great state that propagate material on the level you are seeking. Yadda out.

If you are somewhat familiar with your area, ask around for those who may have healthy fig trees and are willing to sell you cuttings at a nominal price.

And as "thisisme" posted, the price should definitely be nominal, as many folks prune their figs and discard the prunings. The suggestion of asking a landscape or lawn service worker is a good one also, as they can at least identify homes that do have fig trees. Knowing someone personally in such businesses would be very helpful for you.

There are plenty of fig trees in your area, for sure, and you need only locate a congenial fig owner. Someone would surely sell you 200 fig cuttings for no more than a buck apiece, if they had them. If a fig owner had enough wood--and it doesn't take that much for 100 cuttings of each variety you mentioned--you may be able to get the cuttings cheaper than a buck apiece.

Why not post your e-mail address, if you're so inclined, and you may yet get a response from this forum. One would want to know exactly when you need them--I would assume if you want them for the coming growing season, you'd want them as soon as possible?
