Kalamata Store Figs From Store and My Last

Well knowing i only had a few of my tree dried figs we were shopping at the world market store today and i have seen these before so today i broke down and bought some, they are Kalamata Figs imported from Greece. Just yesterday i was at my favorite Italian small store and saw some imported from Turkey but did not buy those as i wanted to try the Kalamata ones. I think these might be the light colored Kalamata and not the black type. Also below them are my last ones from past season which are now digested, i had dried hardy chicago and sals.

Martin thanks for the picks and sharing your experiences. Please let us know if the Kalamata Figs are any good and how they compare to your dried figs.

i tried them today and they were to dry and just did not impress me first one was tart , second was less tart, third one similar and they remine me too much of fignuttens type cookie i bought in past and do not care for, im not being bias or anything but i would not purchase these again and will suffer thru this winter without anymore dry figs. I liked mine much better they were sweeter by far i just need to pick the right time like i did last year when figs were getting nice and ripe and hot weather was with us, maybe i try to dry in car as some have suggested also i dry more next year. I looked for anything fake on package of these kalamata figs but it said natrually dries figs with no preservatives which is a plus. They had piece of stem on it so dried with skin on and these must be the white ones as they are light in color unlike my dried ones which are all dark types thats all i grow. Also i tried drying with skin on and off with no big difference except without skin they sparkle somewhat when dry i guess cause of the sugar. Hope this helps.

I don't know why these roses are growing either though I wonder if some are treated with something that stops them from growing. Perhaps you got roses that had been treated with fewer chemicals. Anyhow, I hope your babies grow strong and well! Wish I could supply you with my organic roses during your pregnancy! Of course that would have to be next spring now and suspect your babies will be due before then. I hope you will keep us informed of how your little gardeners are doing. What a wild adventure you are started on!

Thanks for the encouragement. Yes Smokey was big like a potato. I wish I had more than one. My other Smokey is in a pot that froze solid. I look forward to seeing some of these bloom next year. I planted them too late this year so half of them only had a single bloom or didn't bloom at all. I didn't get to see Bella S, Moor Place or Bishop's Children. All those tubers from Bishop's Children were a shock since I planted it from seed. Gerrie Hoek produced the most blooms and tubers. The most tying up too. I think next time Gerrie Hoek should be planted in a large cage. Sharon.

storing figs indoors for winter

Hi Wild Forager, Your figs will go into a dormant phase whether indoors or out. Now that it's getting colder, they will begin to lose their leaves, which is a sign they are heading for dormancy; they should be brought indoors and kept in a cool and relatively dark place for the winter. They will begin to put out new growth perhaps along about Feb or March. They may put out figs on the previous year's growth (the breba crop), but most of the new figs will be produced on the new growth in the spring (the Main crop). I've heard some folks recommend that the breba crop should be snipped off to allow more of the tree's strength to nourish the new growth and new figs. Incidentally, prior to the new shoots sprouting out in the spring they can (and perhaps should) be pruned back about 1/3 of this year's growth. You will be surprised how fast the new branches, leaves and fruit will develop on the pruned back branches. When the last danger of frost has passed (in my zone 5/6 that is mid-to-late May) they can be brought back outdoors, but if you have the facilities it is better to re-introduce them to the outdoors gradually, perhaps keeping them in a garage or shed where it is cooler than in the full outdoors for a couple of weeks. I will bring mine from the basement around mid-late April into the garage and then outdoors about mid-May. I don't want to overwhelm you but you might want to read up on up-potting and re-potting along with the need for root-pruning after the first year or two. Good luck. Pasquale

Vicki: Plants need water--of course, not nearly as much in cold weather--and indoors, in your garage. I'd monitor it every few weeks to a month, and give it water--sparingly--when the soil feels dry. Don't soak. If mice or voles have access to your garage, they'll eat the fig bark and wood. I don't want to sound like a stuck record about this, but I lost a number of figs (in my basement) last Winter when voles got in, and I'm sounding the alarm about them. Put your figs where mice can't get them. I don't know the temperature in your garage, but 30F to 40F would be ideal.

Martin,
I bought some dried figs too. I wasn't fussy, just picked up a package. They are from Turkey. I put a few, cut in quarters, in a pan with some water and stewed them. Not bad. Once in the water one could see they were several different kinds of Figs. Some light some dark, some softened and some stayed relatively hard, some had good flavor and some were bland. All in all they tasted pretty good. Nothing like fresh, of course, but the next best thing in the middle of winter.
