Coreopsis Early sunshine

I bought two gallon-sized pots of this at WalMart yesterday.

Coreopsis 'Early Sunrise'

Not only is Coreopsis 'Early Sunrise' beautiful, but it also has a strong, sweet perfume. Beautiful!

I couldn't resist these.

I set these in a bed of roses that needed contrasting filler flowers and it looks terrific.

I planted one in a large pot next to the patio s I can smell it and look upon it. It is sitting in with Darlow's Enigma rose, Climbing Blaze, with Red Breadseed poppies in front.

I love the combination!

I may go back for more. Once they stop blooming, the store will knock the price on them w-a-y down to move them out. I will snag them all! Some for the gardens, some down by the mailbox, and some to plant up in the meadow. :)

Going to go dig up some more dark blue Spiderwort plants along the roadsides that are blooming everywhere now. They are growing with the wild Coreopsis and Scarlet Paintbrush right now. Gorgeous!

Oops! I goofed on the title. Supposed to be Early Sunrise, not sunshine.

I cannot stand not being able to edit and delete things we've posted on the forum.

Haha...I know...sometimes I realize I goofed, just as I hit submit! Those are great plants and they really do bloom forever. I had them in Nebraska and they just kept going, even through the hottest, most humid summers. I loved pairing them with Russian Sage and Purple Coneflowers.

I have grown this variety for years in my zone 3 garden. I started them from seed as you did. The problem with direct sowing is the length of time they need to become a viable plant. I'd say save your seed and start them next year. This is a very short lived perennial. It blooms so profusely that it actually blooms itself to death. I cut off any blooms about 3 weeks before frost to strengthen the plant. Even with that I still save seeds and plant them every couple of years so I always have this lovely plant

Could be Coreopsis Sterntaler also. Go to www.bluestoneperennials.com and put "coreopsis" in the search box. Then check out which it really looks like. If I send you a SSAE, would you send me a spent flower head when it turns brown for the seeds? Paul

mouse-ear would fit your call: coreopsis auriculata "Nana". It's one of the first things to bloom in my garden.

I grow three other varieties:
Coreopsis lanceolata (Lance-leaved Coreopsis), Coreopsis Coreopsis tinctoria (Plains Tickseed), and one, I think is called 'Tiger Stripes, - looks like a whirlalgig. All were grown from seeds, except this new one, 'Early Sunrise'.

I got mine at Walmart too! They're blooming like crazy. I did find that they wilt pretty fast once they start to dry out. Deadheading is easy with these because the flowers are so large.

I bought one two years ago. I think I overdivided it and too late at that last fall. Not a single division survived the winter. They were always the earliest to bloom in my yard and I loved them. I haven't seen them available this year. I'll be keeping my eye open for them in the future.

I will be saving seeds, so I can send you some.
There are spent flowers and green seed pods on these plants now, so there should be seed ready pretty soon. Send me an email with your address if you want, and I will mail you some fresh seed as soon as they dry out.

That looks beautiful. I've given up trying to grow coreopsis, atleast the larger leaf ones. If they even make it through the summer for me, they don't come back in the spring. I haven't tried the threadleaf varieties yet, but I see them growing everywhere in my area, so maybe those will do better. Or maybe it's just me.

I love their fluffy fullness. Makes them very different looking than other Coreopsis, at least any I have seen. Plus, they smell so sweet! Their fragrance is reminiscent of Sweet Allysum. I don't recall other Coreopsis smelling like that.
I just love them.

Totally Confused, try to find the Full Moon variety. For me, it grows like a weed and blooms late into the summer and early fall. If you can't find it, let me know. I planted a 1-gallon plant in the summer of 2008. I divided it in 2009 into 12 new starts. Each of those 12 could easily be divided again next spring. It reaches over 2' tall here. No mildew, no problems at all.

Moonbeam is a good fern leaf variety. It can also be divided in the spring and has just started blooming here.
