The tree was the white twig angled off to the right at the beginning of the year. Everything else is this year's growth.

Fig pruning 101. Well so far I've pruned my trees in the fashion shown in pit's pix, according to Herman's advice, following Gene's suggestions, and two of them I cut right down to the ground and mulched heavily as mentioned in a post I read several months ago. No tree has escaped!!! We'll see what works.....Elder

So, Elder, next year your will be teaching grad school pruning? Mabe offering a Masters in Pruning?

Hello, Sultane is a French grown fig variety, probably originating from North Africa, producing a lot of brebas and a lot of fig for main crop. I had one which was so infected with Mosaic that I decided to discard it. Small leaves, trunk distorted, etc... From what I know: Sultane is hardy to z7. Breba crop fig are sweet but not excellent, pyriform, with a thick skin. As for the main crop, it rippens only during a very long long time in very long long summer regions. A lot of heat is required. The taste is said to be superior than the brebas (excellent according to some, very rich according to others)... I hope this helps, Etneo

Gene, NOOOOOOOOOOOOO problem. Just don't have time for some of those things. Thanx. Etneo, Would love to do that but just not enought time. All them are sliced and posted at http://figs4fun.com, just done individually. I only cut up ones that haven't been photographed. That way I don't have to eat them all immediately. Elder, I have sent pic to USDA/U C Davis of anything of theirs that has fruited. I have ahd a couple e-mails with Ray Givans of Nafex, but nothing much.

Naw, I'm still in the early apprentice phase. Old as I am, I still like to experiment. That's one BIG reason I love this fig forum, there are so many different ideas presented, so many wonderful new methods to try. It's why I urge ALL readers to post not only what has worked, but also what has not worked.....Elder
