desert island???

First of all I think I found my forum reading down through some of the threads made me howl. I posted this question on 2 forums and did not get much of a response so now I am asking you guys. If you were stranded on a desert island with perfect growing conditions what 5 ornamental grasses would you want and what 5 daylilies would you want with you. Mind you, you have plenty to eat so you wont have to eat these plants or make shelters with them they will be there for your viewing pleasure.

Hardy pampas grass (Erianthus or Ravenna grass), for sure! It's absolutely stunning when it blooms. I'd also like a porcupine grass (green with horizontal yellow banding), good old maiden grass (Miscanthus spp.), some type of blue grass (Heavy Metal?) and one of the dwarf types - Hamelin maybe, or the one they call "bunny tail". If it was a more tropical island, some purple pennisetum.

Oops. That's six. Oh, well!

I'm not a real daylily fanatic, but I think I'd like some of the old-fashioned "lemon liles" that came with my house... they have a darker-green leaf, lovely lemon-yellow flowers that are fragrant. I'd also like some little "Happy Returns", since they bloom all summer but are a true yellow rather than Stella-gold. Let's see... there are always about a half-dozen daylilies that turn my head when they bloom, but I don't remember the names. Prairie Blue Eyes, maybe? And maybe a pink from the "Siloam" gang. That's only four, but maybe my sixth grass will make up for it!

Sorry, I'm not big on grasses or daylilies, lol. What I would surround myself with are begonias, I've become quite enamoured of them lately.

I got my original Blossomtime as a boxed bare root grafted rose at Home Depot. It is one of my favorite climbers. Mine has been in part shade all these years and still reblooms well although it gets some blackspot where it is. It is an exceptionally pretty rose. I think Awakening is prettier than New Dawn but it is less vigorous which might be a plus to some.

It just so happens I have my mom's copy of Better Homes and Gardens "Gardening in the Shade" and it talks about types of shade at the beginning of the book. It says types of shade can be divided into different categories. Partial shade, also called open shade or semishade covers the areas that receive three to six hours of sun a day, either in the morning or afternoon, or have lightly dappled sunlight all day. Light shade, also called thin shade, is when plants are under young trees or trees with very small leaves which allow sun to still get through to the plants. Medium or half shade is the kind that makes you comfortable on a hot summer day. This is shade under trees with branches 20 feet or more off the ground. Many plants will still grow well in this shade, according to the book. Full shade is the shade beneath mature trees with heavy foliage, like maples and oaks. Some shade plants will still do well, like hellebores, ivy, wild ginger, hostas, ferns and violets. Dense or heavy shade is the kind of shade found beneath evergreen trees or the north side of a tall building. This is difficult for most plants and often ends up being a deck or patio with potted plants that can be rotated out to sunnier locations. It's a good book and it also has a reference section for many shade-tolerant plants. Very pretty pictures, too!

I stand before an empty audience? Heeellllooooooo out there.... I was thinking about a one hour speaker or guest. (Starting at noon during lunch being served. I think it should be on something appropriate like seed saving techniques or methods of mailing live plants, explaining methods for sowing seeds and working with seedlings to mature plant and also methods of maintenance. Basic life cycle of plant and other info of interest. I am thinking about this being the topic for discussion. I could pitch and then run and hit the ball run to first and get myself embarrassed by attempting such diverse feats. So, Iam really hoping that those attending may be comfortable enough to share ideas opening on these topics. I think it will be a success nonetheless. Ideally the line up of speakers should be......??? Open discussion is encouraged. So expect my updates starting back again in January. In the mean time I will be lurking and my email will be notifying me if there is any posting ( as posting do when one starts up one and posting are added)and I will attempt to reply but will be responding better in January! Cheers and I wish everyone a Safe and Joyous Winter! See ya all next year in 2005! G4 In the mean time....get some trading material ready. I hope for a great turn out. And yes, suggestions in efforts to create smooth transitions with trades and communications is always welcomed. If I get a lot of interest I may rent space at my local elementry school gymnasium, however, If the group is under 50 there is indoor space available to accomidate what ever.

Rosefolly, I agree with you about those publishers, careless cads, but glue is readily available so we'll be all right. I think we should definitely all get washed up on an island together with our little mini-libraries and then find that the island was once inhabited by a wealthy hermit who loved books and we came upon his mansion and it was well stocked with food and wine and a huge library of nothing but signed first editions and every other book ever written,plus preplanned regular shipments from all the publishers with their new crops of books, with plenty of bedrooms for everyone, and clothes in the closets, and a beautiful garden and then we find a will in the locked desk drawer and lo and behold it deeded the entire island and all it contents to me, his beloved long lost niece, as long as she shared it with the other booklovers she washed ashore with on Fantasy Island, two of whom are physicians, two are nurses, two are dentists, and two more are optometrists and two more are opticians, all of whom can man the fully stocked medical center in the East Wing if necessary. gbg....out of her mind

I don't remember the names of the daylilies I have and like, just 'Happy Returns'! The grasses I love, love, love (5, right?) are: #1: 'Karl Foerster' Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis), Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' or 'Strictus', Panicum virgatum 'Rotstrahlbusch' (Red Switch Grass), variegated Oat Grass and a big Miscanthus such as 'Gracillimus' or floridulus.
