Kiss-me-over damage. :'(

I was given a large rootstock of Kiss me over the garden gate (sheesh, is there an abbreviation? :) ) and I'm very upset.

Out of four very healthy stalks, they've been chomped. Over the last two weeks, every one is down. This morning was the last one.

I have no idea if it's going to come back, can anyone help? I have other plants in the area, so the roots will still get water. I'd love to hear that it would re-sprout this spring, but I'm not counting on it.

I'll settle for late this year, or next?

Or is it a lost cause, without the leaves to help feed it?

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about that! I've tried to grow some from seed the past two years but mine never survive. Others have had success and they are apparently an easy plant to grow. If they don't recover this year, you could always start some from seed for next year.

I grow both every year. Kiss Me Over the Gate is not the least bit invasive in my yard and in fact, every year I scatter seeds and wish for more volunteers. Love Lies Bleeding is not invasive either, but I do have many volunteers pop up. Problem is, they never pop up where I want them to so I always start a 6-pack of them to plant where I want them to grow. Perhaps it's my zone, or my dry winter winds, but I don't have problems with invasives like most of the country seems to. KMOTGG gets tall....I mean really tall....like 12 feet tall.

Hi Barb- I have some seeds left over from 2010 you can have for postage if you'd like. They need 2 months of cold stratification though (and I didn't have them stored in the fridge) so I'm not sure how well that will work out for you, since they generally take 3-4 months to bloom. I usually winter sow them...

A few suggestions: Winter Jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum)??? Japanese pieris (Pieris japonica)??? Witch hazels (Hamamelis spp.) ??? Camellia ??? You can do a Google Images search for "winter blooming shrubs" and possibly spot your mystery shrub. :-) Rosie

Deer always get mine and I have quit trying to grow them. However, they did spring back up after being chomped early in the season. Just put something around them so the deer aren't attracted to them like college kids to Taco Bell.

Oh, that's a shame. Do you know what is eating them? Rabbits can be repelled with dog hair if you have a dog or a groomer near you. I hope they sprout back up for you nice and thick like they've just gotten a pinching back.

If you can get just one plant to survive, they will be yours forever! I started some from seed last year and they seemed kind of difficult on germination and growing in the pots. I transplanted two at each end of the garden and this year have dozens of plants!
