I checked my bed today...

... and found that the lilies are peeking their little heads out of the dirt!! Dang it, I haven't even got my mulch delivery yet. Guess I'm going to have to mulch around the litte guys now... not all of them are up yet but at least half are showing or at least breaking through the soil.

I was out there weeding the bed as there's a bunch of little tiny seedlings coming up... easy to pull thank goodness.

Will post photos once there's something to show.

Very exciting! I planted some casa blanca lilies and they are coming up, too.

What shocked me is that it's only been about 10 days since I planted them! Didn't think they'd be poking out this quick.

Genny, I'm so sorry this happened, poor little Troy, I'm so glad she will be ok, sounds like your making some good changes for her. I have some duck eggs in the bator and will be a new duck mom soon. I have a lot to learn. Hope someone with experience can give you some insight. Take care, Sheila

Checking my sprouts today

Okay, I braved the damp, cold day; took my trusty compostion book and pen and checked on all my WS containers. Here's what I found that had sprouts:Jan. 20th. Malva zebrina and Mystic Merlin Planted Jan. 11th Canterbury Bells(cup & saucer mix), Forget-me-nots, Painted daisy, Alaska shasta daisy, Sunray coreopsis Planted Jan. 27th. Scabiosa "Summer Berries", Johnny Jump-ups Jan. 29th. Sweet William Planted 2/16 Dward Candytuft in greern liter soda bottles more dwarf candytuft in milk jug Planted March 5 Alyssum Rosie o'Day. These are planted in red, cold drink cups inside a Sterlite container. Planted 3/13 Dwarf Candytuft in coffee cups inside Sterlite container One of the last Sterlite containers I set out with coffee cups planted had dried out so I watered them with the sprinking can real good. Hope that didn't hurt germination process. Still a lot of seeds haven't germinated yet..maybe if we the warmer weather the weather forecasters keep telling us about coming mid week through rest of week, I will see more sprouts. Have to keep check to make sure there are no more dry cups. Lesson learned there.

Hi Mandolls, Usually we are able to plant around the 1st of May but the last couple years have been cold and wet so I had to wait until later to plant. I am crossing my fingers for a nice early warm spring. I will only start the biggest ones in the house sometime around the end of March. I do have a small portable green house that I can put them in outside. Last year I had to put christmas lights in it at night so it wouldn't get too cold and that worked pretty well. I can't wait for spring either... I am going down to Las Vegas in a few weeks and I am looking forward to some nice weather there. Linda

I have to agree with Josh_Palm_Crazy, and Xerophyte_nyc in this thread. Im in a warm zone 7B / cold 8A, and sago's outdoors HERE do not even work. Not year round anyway. The outdoor Trachy in zone 4 is far more feasible and far more believable than an outdoor sago in zone 5. Its a nice yard, nice layout..etc, but I personally wouldnt have selected some of the plantings. Does that wall with the washingtonia face south? Just curious. IF thats a south facing wall, you may have a chance at protecting the washy there, but I really just dont see a washy coming through a zone 5 winter. If we could do there are where I am located, I would be doing it by now for sure. This is almost like that Butia Capiata in Rochester NY, only they move it indoors every year to a conservatory. That palm simply cannot be grown in rochester ny, outdoors, year round. Those Bananas look very small too. Personally, I wouldnt expect more than a few feet out of them this season max. Anyway, good luck with it. Ill be curious to follow it and see how your things grow.

Wait until they bloom. Then you really will be happy. I have just been adding more and more lilies each year as they are so lovely.

Rita - my neighbor is the one to blame for me getting, as you like to say, "lily crazies" ;-)) She has quite a large garden out back and it's loaded with lilies and other perennials... I go over there every day when they're blooming because I love them! I am planning on adding more lilies in the fall... hopefully.

kay - I am amazed that they came up that fast to be honest.. I can't wait until they bloom!

I was going to mulch over them and then plant the whole bed with the annual seeds but I'm not sure if the seeds will grow in the mulch or not... any idea if this will happen? If not I'll just leave the dirt bare and scatter the seeds around the lilies... that'll just mean I'll have to be very attentive to the weeds.

Cheryl- You can not mulch and then sow seeds on top. And you can not sow seeds and then cover with mulch. You can have the mulch and forget the seeds or you can have the seeds and forget the mulch.

Thanks for the info Rita... guess I'm gonna sow the seeds and forget the mulching! At least on the parts that I want them to grow... wonder how stupid it'll look to have parts of the bed mulched and others not!? Oh well... who cares what others think.. it's MY garden afterall! ;-))

Sorry to lower the tone but when I first read the title I wondered what exactly you were hoping for. Last time I checked mine it was still the same old DH.
