The Truculent Gardner, and should I move them now?
Comments (11)I called her and asked why she planted that way and she went completely off on me, telling me I'm "far too critical" of her work, and a long, unhappy confrontation ensued, telling me about her forty years of experience, how she doesn't like irises because the blossoms are too short-lived, etc. etc. That's sad. I'd move them now. I'm not sure where you are located. You can add your zone and state abbreviation in the one box provided for the garden zone. see I am zone 5/6 S IN You can do that via the Member Pages link in the green banner at the bottom of any page. It will then show on your Member Page and show automatically each time you post. Taken from the FAQ here If you have the room, plant your rzs about 2' apart with no other plants nearby to overgrow them and compete for soil nutrients. You can also plant 3 separate rhizomes in a triangle 1' apart with the leaf fans facing outwards to produce an instant clump effect. I'd just let her know that you happen to know a thing or two, at least about irises and spacing them. Let her know you are in touch with lots of iris growers/lovers (as we are here). If need be, and you don't think it will upset her even more, maybe print out that FAQ and show it to her. Seems she might 'think' she knows it all, as a result of years of gardening. I know several gardeners who have gardened a 'lot' longer than I have, yet they know a lot less about so many things. Maybe she just needs to be left to weeding, and then I would be careful of what all she might pull and destroy. Sue...See MoreCracked Pot Gardner's ~May~
Comments (134)Linda-Your box arrived today. I love everything! You're sensational!!! Linda sent me the most amazing tropical plants. Cuttings from her Mother's Day Plants (Linda I had to look these up and I'm so excited to receive them)-Clerodendrum thomsoniae (Bleeding Glory-Bower) and Pandorea jasminoides 'Charisma' (Variegated Pandora Vine). Also Linda's favorite Coleus 'Stained Glassworks Trailing Plum'. There was a card in the box with stories on all the plants she sent. I love having a story to tell when I show people my plants. I also received 3 fans of Iris 'Above Board', Stokes Aster and Oxalis triangularis. I was very excited about the new Passiflora Chave. This plant was hybridized in Spain and newly registered. Linda traded for it. I also received gardening gloves, a Lucky Clover Grow Kit, a gardening sign that reads 'Life is a Garden tend it with Joy' and a Sea Horse water diffuser. I know just what pot I'm going to put this in. Plus there were seeds, 3 different Daylily seeds, Gerbera Daisy and Morning Glory Tree. Linda thank you so much for everything. I'm thrilled to receive plants with such a rich history. The cuttings are all in water and I'm going out to pot up the rest. Mariann...See More~July~Cracked Pot Gardner's
Comments (150)Hello! I received my box from Becki today!! :) Along with a nice card, Becki sent me Seed Baggies (I'm doing alot of harvesting, so these will be used for sure!) Permanent markers (always need these!) Twist ties with dispenser/cutter, (I really like this!) 3 Backyard living magazines that I can't wait to relax with, Lupin 'Dwarf Fairy Pink' seeds and Primrose seeds. For plants Becki sent Pansy 'Caramel Spice', the flowers are still fresh! such a pretty color!, Begonia 'Royal Picotee' (I've got this and the Pansy planted already), and HUGE divisions of Candylily, Painted Daisy, and Spearmint. Thank you so much Becki! I wintersowed some painted daisies in 2007, and only got one plant to take, and it bloomed for the first time this summer. I was planning on wintersowing some more, and now I don't have too!! I love the Spearmint. I've got a few herbs now, and would like to start an herb garden. I have the perfect patch for the candylily also. Thanks so much, Becki! Have a great day everyone!! Karen...See Moremostly H, little G on HGTV
Comments (16)Gardeners must be a dying breed. In my neighborhood, there are only 2 families that are out there most days; putzing and weeding and deadheading. Everyone else has low/no maintenance little beds and big lawns that are faithfully mowed. As for myself, I have turned over the bulk of the work to outside help. Altho, now that I have imporved health, I hope to do more. I love it too, maybe even because it is so fleeting. I didn't get cable until '97, but there were tons of shows about gardening on at that time. Now the only one left seems to be Gardening by the Yard. Gardners Journal, Gardners Diary, Rebeccas Garden, Perennial Gardens, and so many more, are now long gone like dinosauers. Two nice ones came out of Canada. Some specials came out of England. Penolope Hobhouse (?) was a particular favorite. She made me laugh so hard with her shrieking voice, I had to tape it and play it over once I'd calmed down. As for Victory Garden, it gets more mainstream every day. Whereas, it used to be sort of charmingly quirky. Who remembers Roger? He was so homey: grungy, bearded, breathless. A sort of stereo typed farmer. Loved that guy. So, my thought is that HGTV should just stick with HTV. And perhaps another channel will take up the Gardening programs. Even if shown only on weekends, it sure would be nice. Comments?...See Moregardengirl10
