Beautiful photos again -- love Walking in Beauty and Sacred Ground. I think this bloom is even better than the last you posted. Did you get SG as a bonus from Ledgewood? They sent me Dreamy Elegance as a bonus last year -- I like yours better!

Chris - I got Sacred Ground from Pinebeltman on the Lily Auction after I won a couple of other Abajians from him. The bloom does NOT resemble the Ledgewood photo very much, but their photos are obviously blued up. Someone likes to use Photoshop's auto smart fix on Gunda's daylily photos:) Winter Wolf, one of the others I got, is peach with a purple spiderweb eye like JULIE NEWMAR - not lavender with a lavender blue spiderweb eye as the photo shows. I'll have to wait to find out what LORD OF THE WIND really looks like. It hasn't put up a scape yet. What Abajians do you have, and do they look anything like the Ledgewood photos? I think they are good plants. I just wish the photos better represented them. If they had, I probably wouldn't have bid on Winter Wolf because of its resemblance to Julie Newmar.

Will, your 3th 'Piccolo' is the true form, the other 2 are not. It looks to me that your first 'Piccolo' and second false 'Piccolo' are the Abies fraseri 'Fastigiata Compacta'. Your Abies fraseri 'Fastigiata Compacta' doesn't show a fastigiate growth at all so I presume that it isn't this cultivar but one of the many witches' brooms found of this species. The Abies nordmanniana 'Trautmann' doesn't seem to be an Abies nordmanniana at all. I hope Clement or Resin can help you out with the cone you're showing us... The Abies nordmanniana 'Pendula' isn't right, it looks like a cross between Abies grandis and Abies nordmanniana weeping form, maybe it's a true Abies grandis weeping form. Will, why don't you stake this one, maybe then it's more clear to see to which species it belongs... Your Picea mariana 'Fastigiata' is a columnar form of Picea abies, it's the 'Cupressina' or the 'Columnaris'. I hope I helped you a bit with my info. It's a big pitty that the seller sold you conifers under the wrong name, I can't understand why they are doing this. Maybe you can trace back some stocklists of these sellers so you can find out which other one's are possible?

Didn't get much done yesterday. We did go to Dorothy's Digs and I got some pumpkin, zuchini, okra seeds and another pair of gloves. We came home and I decided to mow the grass in the chicken yard/orchard (just 3 trees) that had not been mowed all year. DH wanted me to let it grow to shelter the chickens.....didn't like that so got the mower out. Now that was a job; had to make several passes to get it all down. By then, the showers started. It didn't do much at first but then really let loose and rained most of the night. We had 3 inches in the rain gage this morning. That means the garden seed will be waiting for a dry out. I have another pink poppy in bloom and it is a very frilly double. I surely must have broadcast the seeds last fall. BTW, it is raining hard right now after the sun was just shining. Bird update: Seems some of the hummers are gone; still have the wrens and bluebirds nesting nearby. Orioles are gone. Regarding mowing and trimming and what neighbors think...we live in the country and I have a neighbor or two that mow, and trim and spray their road frontages of hay fields...now sure looks good but I am not getting into that little contest. It is enough for me to attempt to keep the yard in good shape. Blooming now: several varieties of salvia, the poppies, three clematis, one or two daylilies, some roses, gaillardia,heliopsis Loraine Sunshine, another heliopsis, my dug-out-of-the-ditch tradescantia and that seems to be it. I am going to have a few blueberries on my newly set bushes, very excited about that. Christie, I would like to see your rose campion in bloom. The ones I set out don't look too good right now. They don't seem to be growing much. Re the Bermuda Grass, I bought something called over the top (I think) for bermuda, supposed to just kill grasses and not hurt perennials or other broad leaves. I plan to use it once the rain stops. I have Bermuda in many, many places! I will keep check on when the Lauren's Grape stops blooming. The rains are hurting them; many are rotting at the base. Of course, I left them wherever they came up and really should have thinned them ruthlessly. William, don't get discouraged! That is the life of gardening. Sometimes things go really great and others they don't. I have bug holes in everything, I have Colorado potato beetles on some potato plants, and weeds everywhere. But, the bright side is we have lots of rain. I just treat for the bugs, start one bed at a time weeding, and wait for something else to rear its ugly head......and it will. That is part of it. My dear, departed dad used to say "think how boring life would be if everything went smoothly all the time". He had a point. All for now.

The rhododendron border is out (former site of the pines) This is Calsap in another garden A yakushimanum -can't remember which one. A hino crimson azalea in The Philosophy Garden Does anybody remember the name of the little white flowers? Kousa out front - not the one I stumped - just out Salix integra ‘Hakuro-nishiki’Dappled Willow is really tall. In a garden with rainbow leucothoe and little henry itea, and Japanese styrax - soon to bloom. It's loaded with little bells. And, my box of lettuce. (smile) Jane - we all have such wonderful flowers and shrubs. We're all lucky!

Wow, gorgeous garden, punky and amazing to think it's only a year old. I am finding myself imagining the rose scent. Sped, I've been planning to make a rhubarb pie for most of a week, but have been under the weather. Yours looks lovely. My earliest peony, Early Scout, just starting to fade a week ago. This year is the last one for this particular Halesia. The flowers are gorgeous, but it is borderline in my garden and in this spot is too exposed. It gets killed back often enough that it's a wild thing of resprouting branches, far too large for its spot. So it is getting the chainsaw sometime this summer to allow the magnolia behind it room to grow. The Fothergilla is always eye-catching at this time of year, starting with little chartreuse puffs that expand to this bright white bottlebrush scented softly of honey. After a couple of weeks of slowly opening, once all of them were open it was less than a week before everything starting browning with the sudden onset of 80-90 degree temperatures I am enjoying both the fullness of the flowering of Major Wheeler honeysuckle and the color echo of the columbine that has self-seeded nearby. The same garden near the house that will lose the Halesia with classic cottage garden plants just starting to bloom plus a few deciduous rhodies and a pagoda dogwood. First cutting of the hayfield, with corn sprouting in the upper right corner. You can see how dry our weather has been by looking at our "pond". Earlier in the spring the water extended to the bottom of the photo, and usually it fills the dark green area all spring, so the groundwater is pretty far down.

I'm impressed with WIB also, beautiful bloom! But, my fav of these is SG....love that color and of course that watermark!! :)

Debra, I know what you mean about the Ledgewood photos. It sure suckered me in on buying a few before I realized I needed to pay more attention to the description than the photo.

These Abajians bloom close to the photos on their website: DREAMY ELEGANCE, MALICIOUS RUMORS, LEDGEWOOD'S RINGLEADER and LEDGEWOOD'S EVENING SUNSET. None are in the "blue" family, which might explain it.

I'm still waiting to see blooms on LEDGEWOOD'S TROPICAL BUTTERFLY and DREAM WIZARD (third year here for that one). The one that disappointed the most was MYSTICAL ILLUSION -- it looked nothing like the website photo, which is pale lavender with a darker eye. The description calls it "peach cream lavender," and mine was a muddy peach. I'll look for improvement this year and, if I don't see any, off it goes.

Do you grow L's Oriental Silk? That's one that's tempting me now.

Fairysoap - I have these daylilies in pots. I've been saying where am I going to put these for weeks, and still don't have an answer. LOL It's so hard to stop buying them!

Chris - I only have those three Abajians. I would love to have Ledgewood's Stolen Dreams. Oriental Silk does look like a pretty lavender. I've seen a couple of photos of it that people took last year at Mecca, and their photos looked very similar to the Ledgewood photo.

Lrae - When I get another good photo of Winter Wolf, I'll post it. WW is a nice plant, with good branching, and, at least this time, immediate rebloom. But for folks who already have Julie Newmar, one of its parents, I wouldn't recommend it. Julie has the shark's teeth, better budcount, and is a much better pod parent.

I was walking to the mail box out front today and thinking.... hey, there is an open spot, I could totally move the Stellas that are currently in prime real estate to this spot here and replace them with Grand Floridian, Malaysian Marketplace, America The Beautiful, Wren's Song... and on and on and on... :o)

Earlier this spring I "donated" some large clumps of maidengrass to our neighborhood. :o) Can you guess what replaced them???

Where do the seedlings go? :o0

Debra, I meant to ask about the background behind Sacred Ground. How did you get it to look so soft and blurry?

Kathy - I shoot my flower pictures with an extra long 2.8 Sigma lens on my husband's Nikon D70. It's the lens that throws the backgrounds out of focus. I like how it gives the blooms a dreamy quality.
