Just an fyi...Rose of Sharon do not come true if grown from seed. The only way to be assured of getting white ones are to either purchase them, or start them from cuttings from white ones. I had a double white but cut it down last year. It seemed the buds just went from being 'buds' that never really opened right to being ugly brown distorted faded blooms. I gave it several years to put on a nice show before I cut it down. I also have a single white one that grew from a seed, though the double white one never produced seeds and I didn't have any other white ones. Sue

Spring Meadow's online descriptions of the newer ones they are promoting mention 'Blue Bird' (correctly 'Oiseau Bleu', "blue bird" being a translation into English and not the actual name of the cultivar) being mixed up in the trade. The same will of course become possible with Blue Satin ('Marina') TM at some point, although it is rather early in its history for other introductions to have been put on the market in its place. Bailey nursery has their own blue one that their site says was selected from a block of blue seedlings. So apparently you can sometimes raise seed of a blue one and get a number of additional blue forms. Perhaps this is what happened with 'Oiseau Bleu', seedlings of it being sold as the original clone. Or some other factor like cultural conditions is causing variation in flower tinting and plant behavior.

List them on your trade page, along with anything else you might come up with. I'm sure you'll get a bite. Matter a fact I have a neighbor down the street who comes to the swaps who might be interested.

Ottawan- Halaeva is referring to the Hibiscus syriacus which is a shrub/small tree, commonly called Rose of Sharon not the Hibiscus moscheutos which is the hardy, herbaceous kind commonly called dinner-plate hibiscus or garden rose mallow. You are correct in that the herbaceous hibiscus does sprout from the roots, very late every spring. The Rose of Sharon is quite a vertical shrub with a trunk and branches and sprouts leaves and flowers from those branches. Planting in a protected location is a good idea and also wrapping with burlap to protect from drying winter winds will help.
