Going to work on April 2nd

The weather has been so beautiful here that I hope you don't mind if I share my morning walk to work with you. I'm sorry if some of the pictures are a bit fuzzy but I was sneaking photos through people's front gates as I walked along. It's a 20 minute walk and the show starts with my own window box outside the front door (it's moved on from daffodils to tulips) and ends with the flowerbed outside the front entrance to where I work.) If you are still under snow I hope it cheers you up and if you are already baking maybe it'll give you a breath of freshness. Best wishes Flora

What a wonderful walk.

I also looked at your pictures for Cottage Gardeners. Love those, too. Beautiful flowers and veggies. Your shade garden is such a cool retreat - so lush. The transformation from winter to spring around your bins is amazing too. Such lushness so soon.

Speaking of Explorers, I'm amazed so many Canadian roses died back to the snow line (about 1 foot.) A. Mackenzie, Prairie Joy, Quadra, Morden Centennial, Champlain, & Hope For Humanity died back like never before. We had minus 16 F in mid Michigan, which isn't that cold by Canadian standards. Even John Davis, which stayed green to the tips, is now withering the shoots on its top half. It had to be more than just the cold that did all this damage.

I bought the seeds from several different places. I bought two native wildflower seed mixes that didn't specify which species were included - I bought one of those from some box store like Lowe's or Home Depot and one from a local native plant nursery. I also bought seed packets of particular species (Clarkia unguiculata, Collinsia heterophylla, and Erysimum capitatum) from Everwilde Farms. When I buy actual plants instead of seeds, I usually buy them from local native plant nurseries. You can use the California Native Plant Link Exchange to find nurseries near you that sell native plants and to find plants that are native to your local area. I think contractors do need to be aware of this issue and take steps on new construction to address it. In the years to come there may not be many top load washers available. A second floor laundry should not be constructed the same as a walk-in closet. There are many options to reinforce the floor and allow it to withstand washing machine vibration. And let's face it, not all homes are built to the same quality. I lived in a condo years ago with a second floor laundry and had a top-load Maytag that shook the house like an earthquake. (It was not the washer. The next place we lived the same washer was in the garage and it was so quiet and still that you didn't even know it was spinning.) I would think a cement or reinforced floor on a second floor laundry would be a marketable selling point. They should be sure to put a floor drain in also. Many do not while trying to save a buck. I now live in a tract of homes built 8 years ago that all have second floor laundry rooms with floor drains. I've asked my neighbors and many have front loading machines, a variety of brands, and no one has a vibration issue. We are fortunate.

I'm going-it was fun last year and Duane had some very nice and unusual plants that I was happy to get. Yes, I "shovel pruned" my Epimedium sulphureum, but that doesn't make it any less desirable. I have potted up a number of other things so that they will be well adjusted by Apr.: Hostas, variegated and blue-green; Carex "Toffee Twist"; Daylilies "Fairy Tale Pink", & "Canadian Border Patrol"; Aster "September Charm"; Bulbous Oat Grass; Solomon's Seal; Clematis "Hagley Hybrid" and "Mme. Le Coultre (Marie Boisselot)" and probably more.

Aubretia (Purple Rock Cress) Hardy in Zones 7a-11 per the "Plant Files". I like it too!

Flora, you must feel so fresh and full of life by the time you reach work. My last two "go to work" jobs were nearly 50 miles from my home. I sure never got to walk there, LOL! Thanks for the pictures, they are so pretty!

Wow - what a lovely walk to work! I love all those spring bulbs and flowers in such bright spring colors. You're like me, whenever I walk through town I'm always peeking at everyone's garden to see what's blooming, what's coming, etc. How nice of you to share with us, given that when I look out my window right now I see fresh snow covering everything :-(

DROOLING - If that were my walk to work, I might never arrive. It's gorgeous. Is that what Muscari is supposed to look like?!?!? Mine is so small and skinny in comparison - it's the first year I've grown it. I'd love it if it looked like that.
I am going to add Aubrieta to my wishlist. I know just the spot I'd like to put it...

Enjoyed your walk. Love that spurge and muscari! I have
scilla here in zone 5 US mixed in my spurge but the spurge
isn't in color yet. Maybe by next spring I'll get it set
up.

Thanks for your encouragement. I realised I had missed out a couple of shots so I've put them in if you can stand another look. I get so excited in spring and am constantly snapping away with the wonderful digital camera. Since my family are not bothered by gardens it's nice to share with other enthusiasts. Especially such a nice bunch who are trying, sometimes valliantly against the odds, to create the kind of garden I love. Believe me I do appreciate being able to walk to work. Although I live in a town and this is an urban walk alongside a road it's a very pleasent route with views over the city and little front gardens to snoop into all the way along. All the plants in the photos are tough old stalwarts of British gardens and most are easy to grow in our climate. The combinations are probably accidental rather than design. It seems we always hanker after what we can't grow. For example I have never managed to grow a decent tomato outdoors and a gardenia would require a fancy greenhouse set up. Things like petunias which some of you have self seeding are tender annuals for us. Good gardening. Flora.
