Thuja Green Giants are browning

debim

I hope some one can help me out. I have several Thuja Green Giants Trees that I have planted. They were planted when they were about 18-20 inches tall. Some of them are 6' or taller. Last year, some of them started getting brown on their leaves. At first I thought it was sun burn, but now I don't know. I live in San Diego County Inland area where it does get hot 100+ some days. They are planted in decomposed granite so they have good drainage. They are on a drip spray irragation system which comes on once a week right now. When it stays warm I will put them on twice a week. I dug down only about 3" today & they are bone dry under the 2-3" coarse mulch I have. I stopped digging since I was hitting a lot of their roots. They were watered one week ago. Does anyone know what caused all the browning? I don't want to kill them. Thanks,Debi
