I totally agree. I have always liked very dark foliaged plants. I seek out dark-blooming flowers, too. I have both Sedums you mentioned above, as well as the 'Diablo' Ninebark.

Coral Bells like 'Palace Purple' 'Plum Pudding' and 'Regina'
Purple Fountain Grass
'Red Fountain' Cordyline
'Wine and Roses' Weigela
purple Oxalis

I love how they set off the surrounding colors. Plus they help break up the mass of green when things arent flowering.
Just don't plant alternating Barberries. THAT is evil.

My husband accused me of Goth Gardening last year! I had two containers on our porch with Blackie - Sweet Potato Vine. A ten foot tall black hollyhock. (It came back too, I'm hoping it blooms again.) I also had chocolate cosmos, and heurchera. I planted black bachelor buttons not too long ago. I remember reading somewhere about black nasturtiums, haven't ran into those yet! Our landscape is so green, I just really like the contrast.

mrmorton, I really didn't realize how many plants fit into this catagory, I've seen purple fountain grass but never grown it myself. Maybe this will be the year.
pacnwgardngirl, that black hollyhock is stunning, looks just like black satin. I haven't grown hollyhocks as yet, up here they're prone to rust, so have stayed away from them, but that hollyhock of yours, I want, I want, I want.

I like the dark ones too. 'Vera Jameson' is my favorite sedum and heuchera 'Plum Pudding' is wonderful, even providing a bit of color in the drab winter garden. The 'Diablo' ninebark is on my wishlist for this spring.

One plant that has been vilified on various GW forums the past few years (I am raising my hand as a former vilifier) is the 1996 Plant of the Year, Penstemon digitalis 'Husker's Red'. I had this for four years in my amended clay bed and it was so-so at best. Last spring I moved it to a bed with amended sandy soil and it was beautiful! This is another one that I've enjoyed all winter seeing it's dark foliage against the bleak landscape.

I also have three handsome Cimicifuga 'Brunette' which provide a nice dark vertical accent. I just hope they made it through the winter!

Below is a link to a specialty nursery which features "chocolate" plants. I don't see their 2007 stuff yet. Hope they're still around.

Check out Nemophila "Black Penny" -- black with white edging. Not a foliage plant but ooooooh!
There are some really dark grasses. I'd made a note of them to remember, but I can't seem to find it right now.

Coleus, coleus, and more coleus! The selection of deep burgundy varieties is great. In addition, some have bright colors shot intermittently through the foliage that are really eye catching.

I love coleus, it's one of my must-haves.

Have you tried purple heart, or velvet plant? I usually pair both of them with Marg. sweet potato vine.

Aftermidnight, don't stay away from Hollyhocks just because of rust. Someone recently posted a while ago (I applogize for forgetting who) that the Bayer 3-in-1 (meant for roses) works really well at keeping the rust at bay on Hollyhocks. I'm going to give it a try on mine as soon as it quits SNOWING.

Black elephant ears are really nice....they like dappled shade and are great by ponds or fountains. Japanese blood grass turns a nice dark red...it's pretty in a shaded corner of a garden. I really like my bronze leafed Fringe Flower bush....dark bronze, reddish and green leaves with bright pink flowers. It loves full sun and is drought tolerant, also. Love the dark sweet potato vines....I planted a couple different kinds last year and they're proving to be perennial here....one is a really pretty dark purple and green. Of course, for really bright color I love Persian Shield, doesn't do too well in my zone, but I do have one that's just starting to grow again. Ohhhh....also some begonias are dark leafed as are New Guinea Impatiens.

I like black/dark ones too. DH thinks I'm wonkers. Ever since I discovered that they existed I've made every effort to incorporate them. I'm an artist and I never really realized until I saw the "black" plants that traditional gardens are very high-key. To me, the most satisfying works of art are those with a complete range of values from very dark to brilliant white; why should our soil-and-sun works of art be any different?

My favorite dark plants are my {{gwi:59590}}, {{gwi:629621}}, {{gwi:660910}} (however common they may be), and my {{gwi:660911}}. (The photos of the Dahlia and Cimicifuga are very young plants. They've gotten bigger, but I haven't taken any better photos yet.)

memo, bought some mixed color Hollyhock seed today, I also bought some Salpiglossis, my grandpa had it in his garden when I was a child. Haven't seen it since. If I remember correctly it has a sticky feel to it. I think I know a source for the black Hollyhock, that's a must have.
I forgot to mention above, the clumps of black mondo grass 'Ebony Knight' that I have scattered around here and there. I have a habit of taking the ripe berries and planting them in different spots. Most of the seedlings are black but I do get the occasional green guy.
I've got quite a list made out now for black or dark leaf plants to look for, thanks for all the choices that have been mentioned above.

Not dark foliage, but ornamental pepper "black prince" gets these small black round peppers that look like black patent leather. More of an oddity than beautiful, look good in small arrangements for a dot of dark color. Email me if you want seeds. I also have the dark hollyhock and can mail you seeds in the fall if you remind me.

Many cannas have dark foliage, like canna Australia. These with Carmencita castor bean make bold dark accents.

Thanks Newskye! They're actually {{gwi:660912}}, but they have really glossy leaves and when they're in shade they reflect the blue of the sky and look dark bluish purple (so technically, they only fit the subject of this thread for part of each day). My favorite part is their vivid (Crayola-crayon-intense) red-violet underleaf which flashes when the wind blows. They were a common variety once but they've been superseded, I think, by newer versions, some of hich are definitely darker, and a few are more impressive, but I like my good old 'Palace Purple'.
