This is Wynter Hope. She is my newest grand daughter, and is not quite 3 months old in this photo:

The peonies liked the cold winter we had:

No daylilies yet, but the iris are blooming:

And the Dutch iris have been very pretty:

Organic garden dreams I just wanted to say about the statues: We've spent years aquiring them. We are avid bargain hunters. Sometimes statuary places have a "bone yard" of stuff that has been damaged. Occassionally there will be something there for a great price that has a few cracks that don't bother us or a blemish that can be hidden or fixed. These places do have sales. Sometimes they're very happy to sell something in the winter for a cheaper price if you ask(my husband always asks) Our most important statue, Flora was rather exspensive but not terribly so. I waited for her as we saved the money and then also we found that if you order something and not take it off the lot they discount 20%.

Thanks all. my apologies in the delay in responding. I've been away and have just returned. I try to keep within the soft tones but I do love to mix things up every now and then. I always wanted to feel like I'm in a large meadow garden and so my yard is filled with tall airy type plants. It's quite a compact space but because I prepared the soil well, there's plenty of root space for these plants to thrive. My town's horticultural society recently presented me with a front yard recognition sign -which means one of my neighbors honored me by nominating my yard. I do get lots of people dropping by to check things out. Greylady - that's right. it's to encourage birds. I've also gourd birdhouses around the yard. I'm sorry I cannot name the clematis because I'd already forgotten it. I just recalled I needed white to balance out that spot. I have that Jackmanii type now blooming but I'm rather disappointed with it. There's also a pink one which unfortunately wasn't able to bloom as much because someone doing construction broke the vine... -- what you might find interesting is that I used eyehooks glued on to the brick, and wire to create the trellis which disappears amid the foliage... so the plants look like they are just climbing up by themselves. Philip - thanks. I love your little paradise too. Lots of unusual plants I would love to incorporate here. I will continue to upload photos into the album... Oh my sweet peas have finally bloomed and this late in early August.

Anna, I was so excited to see you grow La Noblesse. I want it but am VERY tight on space. Is she worth growing? There's almost no information at all on it.. Please share any more photos you have.. I have so many pinks, just wondering if she is stand out in any way especially considering she's a once bloomer.. I was also interested in Coupe d' Hebe, so it would be between those two if I did go with one. Thanks!!!

Things are still in full swing here, lots of egg laying going on. But I have just seen two Zebra swallowtails the whole year and not a single Viceroy. I even planted native willow last Fall, since I didn't think the weeping kind will work. I am fascinated with the milkweed tussock moth. I have never seen caterpillars eat so much and travel such distances. I stopped moving them around except for some occasional ones that seem to be lost on the porch. They are doing such a great job finding the milkweed themselves. They even found the milkweed vine that has been ignored by the Monarchs for the past few years. Good to see something besides aphids using it. I do really like the flowers though.

Cute baby. She's just made for that hat......Love your Iris. I wish I had the room and the energy to maintain them. There's nothing like the colors on a bearded iris...... Dutch Iris are a favorite of mine too. Mostly perennial here. I think I may have some blooms too but because of the weather haven't made it out there to look in the last few days. Down to the 30's again last night.......Maryl

Very striking iris. I like that reddish beard on the blue one. Any chance you know the name? The Dutch iris seems to be Oriental Beauty; really prolific. Is Wynter going to be a redhead under that hat?

How do you get your dutch iris to come back? Mine do one year of blooming and then the next some pathetic foliage. Third year is totally petered out and gone.

What a fashionable baby - love the hat! The irises look bountiful this spring. The blue purple irises with the pink roses are a great combo!

Love the baby photo. Sooooo sweet.
Your garden looks great. Those Dutch Iris are very pretty as well as the other iris. Peonies do love the cold.

Lovely, sweet baby. Thank you for sharing her with us. I am anxiously waiting my peonies. They are filed with buds. One good side effect of our miserable winter. lesley

oh Kay, what a cutie. adorable grand daughter. Love the peonies, too.. I have a couple bearded iris blooming too. one is a pretty blue one. I think the name of it is MERCHANT MARINE,and a black one is blooming, don't remember its name.Some thing about midnight, but don't remember it.I have a few daylily scapes up so wont be that long till I will have blooms.I have been busy planting a few tomatoe plants and cukes.Hope your shoulder is better.

Thanks all for all the compliments. I am really goofy over Wynter. Mantis, she isn't a red head, but a blond, at least now. That iris is Paul Black.

Sarahlee, this is the fifth year for the dutch iris, and all I do is allow the ratty foliage to die on its own after the blooming is over....nothing else. Probably like the weather or something. I have a daylily in a pot that has a couple of bloom spikes, but it was a Bill Maryott daylily which means they were probably left form last year. I have noticed that all the blooms are coming closer together. right now, All but one peony is blooming, the roses are in their spring flush, and the iris are at peak. And the iris are so pretty this year, I will have trouble getting rid of more of them, but I do have three of them to dig up. My pictures are not up to usual quality because I have not been out early to take photos.
