Exchange plants, seeds, corms tubers, cuttings, yard art, etc. from your yard with other gardeners. No Sales. Just trades or freebies, please.

The Green Elephant is hosted in North Redmond, Washington, at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross; The site offers parking, covered areas, indoor facilities, kitchen, lots of lawn, and playground. It's five minutes from I-405 and I-520.

Suggestions for Traders

The format for the trade is like a tailgate party. You just pull into the parking lot and open up your trunk to display your treasures. Traders exchange expert gardening information as well as plant materials. In two hours all the deals are sealed.

The Green Elephant is convenient for trading bareroot plants. Simply dig and divide perennials bareroot to trade. They are dormant and can be transplanted with no shock.

The photo to the left shows an easy way to set up trades.

Label your plants clearly. If possible write the common name, the latin name, and cultivar or variety if you know it. Also any interesting attributes of the plant: height, leaf shape or size, color, variegation, flower color. If a trader can see what this brown lump of roots will look like when it grows, it helps seal the deal. Use hortiplex, or pictures you've taken to offer traders color images of your plant when it grows and blooms.

Please do not bring seeds or plants on the Washington State Noxious Weed Lists.

What if I have nothing to bring to the trade?
The Green Elephant Plant Swap is a great place to start your garden. Many traders love to help new gardeners get started. Come and ask questions, get advice, schmooze a little and you'll walk away with some goodies.

Hi All. Sorry I've been away for awhile. -Family passings & such. Winter has effectively devastated my garden, so, being the optimist that I am, I went to the NW Flower/Garden show twice this past week to get my motivation up. I work March 7th, so wont be able to attend the Green Elephant. HOWEVER, I do have a few things that I would like to put out as offerings to people for trades, if interested, and we can swap on a day other than 3/7. Wanteds: I'm still going for tropicaleze theme, with focus on glaucous leaf & black leaf items, or chartreuse. or verigated., flowers that pop in my yard are white, or green. Bananas (would take pups) Brugsmansias (Lost all my biggies), Calla lilies, Cannas, Colocasias, iris, daylilies, black or gold raspberry canes, huckleberries, ferns. Unfortunately, all of my verigated iris has been lost. I gave alot of it out a couple of years ago. If it has done well for anyone who would like to complete the circle with it and schlepp some back to me, I'd appreciate it. I have to trade: bamboos: gold, or thin purple culm that I forgot what it's variety is. Phlox; White (David) Daylilies (varied) passion flower (purple crown, (white constance elliot) siberian iris, (schwann), (?white butterflies?) Maybe able to divide some hostas this year. red rose, (?Parkland series?) still potted& growing well, & maybe some other random stuff.

Dear Friends of the Green Elephant Plant Swap. I have mapped out four Green Elephant events for the coming year. I'll be there; I missed Teresa's trade as I was in Italy (tooo bad). I still have my hesperanthas available for anyone who is interested and will have dahlias for the spring trade.

I'm looking for all kinds of perennials as some of mine were dug up by overzealous gardeners this year (lost my spiderwort, rudbeckia, asters and enchinacea).

Hi all,

I will be there this time. I have missed so many trades this year.
If I promised during the last Green elephant trade that I would bring something please let me know, I will bring it this time.

Jim, I heard through the grape vine that you have a bunch of the perennial sunflower (I believe this is what it is called... I saw it in Teresa's yard at her trade). Would you be willing to share any? I can bring cookies again! :o)

Dear Katherine,

My soul belongs to the prairie. Yes I have seven species of perennial sunflowers. There are many all over N. America. I can bring a piece of lemon queen to the fall swap. I will bring much more to the spring swap, first Saturday in March.

Helianthus x multiflorus 'Lemon Queen' is very robust. It is a hybrid cross of some sort, yet is has viable seed. I started with one shoot about 6 years ago. This summer I have hundreds of stalks. It is not invasive. It's a clumper.
