You may want to keep in mind that most edible fruit is best grown from named-cultivar plants. For instance, apple seeds do not produce trees that produce the same fruit as the apple from which the seed came. Often, seed grown apples are nearly inedible. Even types of fruit trees that are often grown my seed, like pawpaws, can be far inferior to named-cultivars. If quality fruit is your goal, stick with grafted trees or named-cultivar types, for best results.

interesting, i have never heard of this tree...well you got me googling it. =) its quite pretty let me think about it. i am trying to find out if it will even grow here, the reading i just googled says zone 4 - 7 and needs some chill in winter...i am in zone 8 and it does get cold here for a bit, but this is after all california and we dont get that much cold. otherwise i am curious and interested, but let me research it a bit.

Some one said the highbush cranberry tasted bad, but sometimes the European (Viburnum opulus) gets confused with the American (Viburnum Trilobum) and the European is more medicinal. There is suppose to be a 3rd high bush cranberry type around Canada or Alaska that tastes best of all. But, besides those viburnum there's other edible varieties like the black haw (Viburnum Prunifolium), nannyberry (Viburnum lentago), wild raisin (several edible viburnum share that name), hobble bush Viburnum is said to have " consistency of stewed prunes with a bit of clove like spicy fragrance". The native northern fly honeysuckle (lonicera villosa) is edible, and I read a source saying it was used in the breeding program to make honey berries. I have not read to much information on that, but it's likely. I saw its seeds being sold on Etsy. It doesn't make many berries and they are small, but the hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) is said to have berries with a thin sugary pulp, and the seeds crushed with water are edible and is said to taste of almond milk. Looking at ground covers, besides partridgeberry, wintergreen, cranberry, lingonberry, or snowberry, there's the ground cherries you could try. It's leaves and unripe fruit is poisonous, but they are sweet tasting berries when ripe.

I missed the replies because I am not so good at checking that email as I get lots of mail there. I changed it, so I will be more likely to get updates. I appreciate the replies, even though I am late reading them! I believe I have a Brunswick Fig. I dug up 2 suckers in August and I thought I let them die over the winter, but one is leafing out and I think the other one will, too. I would love a pomegranate. I have a friend in Murfreesboro who has one. I actually never got grapes off the wild vines, I use the leaves to stuff with a rice filing. I cut them way back this year. I would like a domestic grape variety. I always have less money to spend on my garden than I would like. I'm sure I'm not the only one with that problem!. I am growing more asparagus from seed. If they make it, I know it will be a few years before I will be eating from them, but i am growing enough Mary Washington plants that I should be able to share at some point. I would like very much to try my hand at growing paw paws. I read somewhere that they can be frozen whole and peeled and eaten "like ice cream" (with big seeds, I guess!) My pear tree is standard size, but I will only be getting dwarf trees from now on, I think. My 5 year old daughter wants a cherry tree. I saw some cool, but expensive 4 in 1 cherry trees. I am not sure how well they would do. I definitely want a peach tree and an apple tree at some point. I am in Nashville and don't have a good enough car to want to travel very far from home. I know there are some swaps around here, if i would pay enough attention. I need to always keep my calendar on me to take notes when I see things!
