question about buying daylilies

I am interested in some daylilies that two growers have. Julie from Eclectic Gardens has communicates so nicely with me. I would like to do business with her, but her prices on some are slightly higher. Is it proper form to ask if she can come down a little bit in her prices, or not done? It is not a lot of money (and the daylilies I'm talking about are not expensive) but I can buy more at a cheaper price of course. But buying from fewer growers means less shipping costs. ?? Please advise. I've only bought in person before, but don't have anyone nearby with what I want. I'm not driving 4-6 hours.

I'd pay more attention to the recommendations here at GW than to the price differences. You truly get what you pay for -- at least that's been my experience. Take Maryott's and Marietta's for example -- they are pricier, but their plants are of exceptional quality, mature, and their performance should please you very much in the following year. There are some real cheapies on-line, one of whom I bought from. I got short-changed two daylilies and got a cheap cultivar in the place of an expensive one I ordered, which looks nothing like the one I thought I had bought -- not even the same color. When notified of the problems, this lady denies everything.

Aren't I Pretty and Sunset Meadow have more reasonable prices, but the maturity is not the same as the above mentioned nurseries. I was very pleased with my orders from them, though. Their selection is excellent.

I've had good luck with almost every nursery I have dealt with. Again, though, all I can say is you usually get what you pay for.

I would not hesitate to purchase more daylilies from Eclectic Gardens, even if their prices were a few dollars more.

Welcome to the forum, I found this forum In Spring of 2008. I had a few old daylilies but knew the name of none of them. I bought a lot more than three daylilies that first year, here is a picture two years later...yep, that garden bed is two years old, so 10 years isn't at all necessary to get the look you want. You want to allow your daylilies to form nice clumps before you separate them but as long as they get adequate water and a bit of food, they'll do fine. You will have to eventually separate them to have blooms, but a lot of mine will be separated for the first time this year.. My garden is a typical one. I have several beds that have only daylilies, and I have one bed that has many different flowers (including dayllilies), with the aim to create a cottage garden look. Look back about 40 pages (bottom of page), and you will see many posts of beautiful daylilies. You can buy daylilies very reasonably, but I will warn you it is something that is almost addictive. It is something that I have wondered about myself. But I love them enough to turn a blind eye to the dead foliage. I keep telling myself that as I deadhead that blooms are helping do something to improve the soil. Probably doesn't though, lol! Some people put the dead blooms in buckets as they deadhead (or livehead). Sometimes I cut off the dead stuff, but mostly I cut the scapes back as they are done blooming and let the foliage die back normally. It is a dilemma. Vickie

I have about 20 lilies, about half of them small fans, that I need to pot up temporarily. Also forgot to mention.....I have bought some from the Lily Auction that will arrive probably in September - not sure whether to pot those up or put them right in the garden. Any suggestions on that? By Sept., it will probably be a good bit cooler so might be better to put them in the ground so the roots can grow....but not sure. Thanks for the advice!

Almost all daylilies do this when they are done blooming. However, if they quit blooming early [without starting the season early], they are probably not getting enough sun. Although there are general rules as to how much sun daylilies get [6 hours minimum, I think it is], each cultivar can vary. I have a few that can go with less; many need more. It is by trial and error to find out which need lots of sun and which can do with less. As a general rule, reds and purples could use a little peak of the sun shade to keep them from fading.

I like doing business with nrb44 on ebay. I get great looking fans and usually extras! He offers a lot of buy nows, so you dont have to wait for the end of the auction. I've done business with him for 3 years and i still have all his plants. He answers any ?'s you ask in a reasonable time frame.

I have ordered from a dozen different sellers. There are some very good sellers out there. But Bill Maryott and Neal Buss (nrb 44) on ebay are in a class of their own.
Both will send you the biggest fans you will ever see in your life.
Neither will sell you anything. Rather they will share their love for daylilies with you. They both have guided me in the right direction, and answered all of my questions. They both sell premium quality daylilies and earn every cent they charge.
Maryott's sells the more expensive newer varieties, and Neal sells the less expensive older varieties.
You can't go wrong with either seller.

Thanks so muchfor the information on sellers. Some of the ones I did look at are "Aren't I Pretty." so thanks for that information. I'd be very interested on who to avoid too. I don't know if I am ready to do ebay bidding on daylilies, but I wrote down those names for future info. Thanks for the info. on Marietta as well. Because I am ordering a bunch from Gene Wynn, I don't want to order now from anyone that requires a minimum, as I'm not going to order that many more from anyone else for right now. I need to see if I can do this "bare root" thing for one.
