Yes. They are kind of slow to take off, but when they do, they go to town and are gorgeous.
Like Morning glories, they are a late summer flowering vine. Well, what I mean to say is that they flower best in mid-to-late summer.
But unlike Morning glories, they don't take over your yard for years to come.
I grew mine on a fence and around a bird house at the back of my veggie garden. They were gorgeous.

The big leafed vines on the fence beneath it are musk melons. I got gobs of sweet, luscious cantaloupes that year. Tomatoes growing on the other side of the fence, and later, short sunflowers behind the tomatoes against the fence.

Oh my gosh, they're beautiful! We have a fence row of Morning Glories which I love. There's barbed wire around our acre and the MG's are growing along one side.

Now I need to find the perfect spot for the vine..and something for it to grow on. lol

OH....I have about 4 plants, how far should I space them to give it that crowded look?

That was just one Black-eyed Susan vine and a Morning glory vine. They twisted and entwined around each other like two lovers.

It depends upon what you want and where you plant them.
If it is to cover a fence row, then space them about 6-12 inches apart. The smaller the space to cover, the fewer plants needed. Also depends upon how much moisture they get and the soil, I would suspect.

The above photos were taken in mid-to-late summer. Earlier that summer, we had a drought. You can see that the grass wasn't green at all. It was horrible. The vine wasn't so thick and didn't have as many flowers. (see picture below)
I had to drag the hose and water every day just to keep things alive. The vine grew up on the fence at first. It put on a lot of leaves and later started making flowers. Then in mid-summer, it grew up on the corner post and by late summer and early fall it had climbed up onto the wren house. Be patient. With all the rain we are getting yours might do better than mine did.

I'll probably grow two around each coil then find a place to put the other two. They'll be close to my MG's but that's okay.

They look like what we have here in Calif and here it's called a Thunbergia vine.They grow pretty quickly for me.

Yes, they are Thunbergia. Common name is Black-eyed Susan Vine.

It was years back. Another drought time. We have them here every few years. :[

I just hope we don't have the hot summer we had last year. At least last summer we got some nice showers a couple of times a month.

Are your vines in full sun? I just read on a website they need filtered sun. If so, I'll scoot them down a bit toward an Oak.

I saw those in hanging baskets at the nursery today.

I grew these in a pot with a trellis in it. I really enjoyed it on my front porch, really fast grower/ A cheerful flower!

Mine planted them on the north side of the fence, so they got some shade from wire fence, I guess, but otherwise were in full sun. They were planted between established herb plants and growing with Morning glories and the cantaloupes.

I saw this vine for the first time last summer in a lawn and was completely struck by its simplicity and beauty. It was a stunning garden, but this simple little vine with its uncomplicated flowers generously twining up a stand was the eyecandy for me. The hunt was on to figure out what it was! I was given some Thunbergia seeds but they have not sprouted. I have a feeling they were not healthy/ripe. I'll keep waiting.

I did order some Thunbergia variants from Parks Seed because I was just completely taken with the vine ('Blushing Susie' and 'Sunrise Surprise'). I'm trying to figure out if they come true to seed because I'd love to plant these year after year! I'm going to twine them up our porch columns and then let the trail one of our New England stone walls. Coincidentally, they'll be twining with Morning Glories! I didn't particularly plan that, but that's just how the spacing ended up working out.

I also wonder if cattle eats them. lol. We don't farm, but there are cattle that hang out on the other side of the fence grazing in the summer. They eat some of the MG's, but not enough to make a difference.

I love discovering new plants, especially if I can grow them! lol.

I also like to see that other's here like Morning Glories like I do. Another "simple" plant with such beauty on a summer morning. They pop up everywhere here too, but they're easy to control. I didn't plant the one's growing up our barbed wire, the seeds just ended up there, and boy do they look nice. Here's a picture from last summer:

A local restaurant grows the lemon yellow version along the front fence. It bloooms until frost, and always looks great even in the hottest part of the summer. Thunbergia germinates at 70-75 degrees, and takes anywhere from 14-21 days to germinate. Barely cover the seed.

Yes, they are S-L-O-W to germinate directly in the ground. If you sow seeds in the garden, wait until the night temps are stable at 50 degrees or more and days temps are as Herblady49 stated. That is why I said mine were slow to get started - I grew them from seeds! Of course if you buy the plants, well that's a horse of a different color.
They are definitely a "warm season" plant.

They did not reseed for me. If they made seeds, I didn't find any. None came up the next year. For me, that was a god send.

I love MGs but they grow too da*ned well here and take over. They even climbed up into my weeping willow tree. It was pretty, but the blueberry plants underneath were bombarded with the seeds in late summer and what a pain that was...and still is. Zillions of seeds coming up in that fertile, moist soil. Aaah!

Wow gorgeous pictures. I'm bought several packs of these to grow this year, I'm going to try in a box and hope that they trail down for me.

Flowergirl, you gave me a great idea! I just now planted two in a large pot, and I ordered some U shaped Bamboo stakes to put in the pot. The stakes are 4 feet tall!

I'm going to put the other stakes next to the coil trellis I bought to help spread it out.
