I am poofed having dragged myself in for the day after working out in the garden. But I love this time of year. Each day something new is growing or starting its bloom as its finially really spring.

The Azealeas are just starting to get a flush of bloom. This is early. There are some years that my Azealas are blooming second week of May. Still the ones in the shrub border are not close to blooming yet. But The small leafed rhodos around the yard are in bloom.

Crab apples are starting. This is my red flowered one. I forgot to get pictures of the others but they look so pretty in flower.

The sideyard garden of roses, lilies, tulips and vines is really all nicely greened up now. Lots of tulips blooming there and so are my Wood hyacinths.

Tower Square Garden. Outside square has TB Iris, tulips and daffs planted and middle square has yellow columbines, pink Hummingbird mint ( summer flowering and just starting to grow)and clematis growing up the tower structure.

The daffs and tulips bloming in the little garden off the porch. I am going to plant the Columbines I bought at Home Depot all along the back. Here I have started today by planting the one light blue purple that you see in the front of the picture.

I like this picture of it because it has lots of easter colors.

So I planted one flat of Snapdragons here in the backyard daylily garden so that I have color even when the daylilies are not blooming. Couldn't get the entire thing (daylily garden) in the picture as I wanted to show the snapdragons just planted today.

I had moved a very few daylilies out of this garden so that I would have empty spots to put the annuals. I want more color than just the daylilies along.

And here I finished off today by planting the second flat of snapdragons in the front yard along a row at the base of the belgioum block mini terraces.

I planted four of my eight tomato plants that I already bought but will have to do the rest and my cucumbers another day. I also tried to clean out my big pond. But it is so bad with so much stinky gunk on the bottom that I have to come back to that project and drain it. All my fish died over this winter :-(( They did fine thru last winter but it was milder that this one.

Oh, and I found TB iris bloom stalk just starting to show today so I was all excited about that :-))

so pretty! I love that riot of color from the tulips in the front, very beautiful. Such pretty pictures, I always enjoy your yard

Those poor tulips along the front really got beaten up from yesterdays rain. But still they don't look bad. They probably will not last much longer as they are the early tulips and the first to open. All my Darwin Tulips are open now and so are most of the other kinds.

Some of those daylilies in that back garden need to green up some more. I just finished fertizing them today as I had run out of fertilizer doing the other beds and had to get more before I could finish. I like my daylilies to be nice and deep green which they usually are.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm hearing from everyone that this isn't the ideal garden situation because of sunlight and the close proximity to the trees. Next year, we may relocate the garden to an area away from the trees. I'm not sure if that area gets more sunlight, I will need to evaluate that a little closer. The current spot does get quite a bit of sunlight though - the sun rises to the back right of the garden, and as it gets to the top of the sky its towards the right of the garden. I'd say it gets sun from 12-1 until about 7PM at least. At 6:30 today it was still getting direct sunlight. I have an updated picture. One tomato plant (the one behind the first row one) is slowly dying...although the first one is still growing strong. Jalapeno, squash, and cucumbers are still producing quite well. I'm keeping the jalapeno's on the plant until I notice cracking/coloring to test out the different stages and flavors. About how long until you start to notice the change in color? And we have some bell peppers starting to grow too...probably about 4 that are ping pong ball size. Here's a picture of our cucumber plant that is starting to get some yellow leaves...any idea what may be causing this? Its only started in the past week or so, but I think we need to get it figured out soon! So far, we had about 10 cucumbers, 10 squash, 5-6 tomatoes, and 3 jalapenos (although about 20 are currently growing). Happy gardening!

Today is another nice day and I was outside this afternoon pushing off and taking off mulch that had blown around (fall leaves) off some of the tulips. The three new sections of Darwins (some are shown in the tulip picture I took above) which are now on their second spring are coming up really nicely. I planted them deeply not last fall but the year before. At this stage just from looking I can't see any difference between what they looked like last spring coming up and what they look like now. Meaning the beds looks full with lots of tulips so looks like great return. But I was also removing mulch from the section of the extra early mix I bought from Scheepers. Those are not Darwins, they bloom earlier. I had 200 but from the looks of what is coming up, nowhere near that now. Poor return. Looks like less than half of what I had last year. I am hoping that since it is still early more of those tulips might still come up but not sure that will happen. I should of planted more of those extra earlies along in that same section like I thought of doing this past fall but for some reason I didn't order them and didn't do it. As of now I deffinately plan to add more of them this fall. The section I am referring to is in the front yard between and in back of the daylilies along the stone wall. Then I also have a section in another garden bed. Some perrenials in the back (columbines) then a row of daffs in front of that. Literally a row because that is how I planted them. Then a row of clumps of tulips in front of the daffs. They were planted 5 of a type in a grouping in a hole. Then dig next hole next to it and five more and so on. Well some clumps comming up but bare spots between them which means certain clumps not coming up at all. These were non darwins, don't remember which class, that I bought because they were so pretty. Planted just as deeply. So no knowing if they might show up but not looking promising. I will have to replant there by just marking with a brick each empty spot in the row so I know were to put new clumps in the fall.

Lovely pics--makes me yearn for your Northwest climate. I don't think Helenium would grow well here in Ohio. I especially like the poppies with those blue hydrangea. What makes me nervous, though, is the gooseneck--so invasive.

Your azealea's are really pretty.I love them red ones.. Them Tulips are still very pretty out front in front of the daffs.I like the side yard with tulips, roses, and lilies.Looks like a little bit of alot of things in it,and you little square tower garden is looking real pretty, too.I think spring has sprung at your place and its starting to look really colorful and green.

Your azaleas are really gorgeous. I like your crabapple. Years ago DH wanted to line our driveway with Bradford Pears & red flowering crabapples, thinking they would bloom together & look really good. Of course, they don't quite bloom at the same time, that's ok, longer bloom time. But then, the crabapples bloomed the first time & we found they weren't all red. Most were pink, which looks a bit odd. Now we've lost most of our bradford pears to wind damage.

I just love the tulips!

I really try for a continous sucession of blooms. Not totally happening but very close. All the spring bulbs I added last fall really is expanding the season for me as I was always missing very early spring flowers.

That sideyard garden looks very full in that shot because of the spring bulbs. I have so many Wood Hyacinths in the back toward the house just starting in bloom now. Then theres the tulips and some (already done) daffs. Of course they die down and dissapear later just like the daffs and tulips.

They rest of the year the garden there is lillies and roses. I just love lillies and roses and I especially love them mixed together. I just keep adding lilies to my rose gardens.

I am trying very hard not to buy an azalea. I just don't have time to plant it but then again, it could live in the pot for awhile ;-).
Love the tulips. Mine are nearly ready to open...finally.
