Hobbiton conifers of the week, June 25th

This week's addition will be called 'A visit to Dragonfly Farms' which is a very cool Maw/Paw nursery in Kingston, Washington. The owner is Heidi Kastor, a gem of a lady who's more interested in cool plants then massive profits. The prices are very fair, the atmosphere is warm and the inventory is both rare and enormous. There are literally 1,200 or so cultivars of conifers available in sizes from 3" pots to 30 gallon monsters. A collector who lives or visits the Pacific Northwest without visiting this nursery is really only denying themselves a great treasure trove of plants. Except for the first plant(abies koreana), all of the following were purchased from Dragonfly Farms:

Abies koreana [Fincham Seedling]. A seedling that Bob selected from offspring of Abies koreana 'Gelbbunt'. STRONG variegation that doesn't burn in 1/2 days sun.

Picea omorika 'T.C. Weeping'

Abies balsamea 'Jamy' VERY small.

Cupressus glabra 'Sulphera' - A bright and beautiful conifer.

Abies balsamea 'Nana' - Very nice little conifer, does GREAT in heavy shade.

Acer palmatum 'Olsen's Frosted Strawberry'

Thank you for the posting, Will! I live just 'across the pond' and didn't know about Dragonfly. I'll pay them a visit as soon as the rain lets up (ha!). Great plants!

Thanks Will for your "This week tour". The Picea abies 'Medusa' is a true beauty and is my favorite, especialy now with the new foliage. During our U.S. trip in January I learned that this cultivar was found as a witches' broom on a Picea abies 'Acrocona' by Jim Boyko. The temporary name he gave to it was 'Acrocona Globe', later on he named it 'Medusa'. Also your Picea abies 'Catharine's Golden Heart' is glowing among it's other colourful friends! You're showing us some very nice colour combinations! Your garden do have a much differend look now then back in January when we visited you, it's full of surprises :0)

Will is waiting for my comments first before he starts a new post :0) Pinus parviflora 'Ara-Kawa' Must be written as 'Ara-kawa'. I don't believe that the Pinus nigra 'Oregon Green' is the true one, the needles are to long and it doesn't have the typical needle setting for this cultivar. (see link) To me the one in the pot looks like the normal species or a simular fast growing cultivar, probably the understock... Will, I also have my doubs about your Pinus parviflora 'Ara-kawa'. This is because the true one does have green needles instead of blue one's. Can you show us a detail pic of the part just above the grafting union, the bark at that place should be courser at that place allready. Thanks in advance! Here is a link that might be useful:

That sucks, that was a nice one too! I'm amazed at how these conifers get smoked in the heat. None of my decidious plants are dieing. The worst I've observed is limp leaves on Clethra and Hydrangea then some sun scroch on JMs. The soft pines are getting hit hard. Only the ones in part sun are doing ok. To my surprise (so far) my firs are doing ok. Abies veitchii 'Heddergott' will be the first to die though. Its a shame as I really like that one. Last four days where 100, 104, 102 and 100 (forecast today). As hot as of some zone 6'ers far south of me. All four days broke records. The hottest DAY of ALL TIME was 105 set in late July 1999. That should give an idea of how extremely abnormal the temps are here in WI. 24 degrees above average 2 days ago. I don't know if I had tears or if those where the sweat bullets pouring from face while watering last night as I witnessed the condition of some of my plants. Another interesting observation is that the only flying bugs I've seen are fireflys and a few mosquitos. No japanese beetles, butterflies, honeybees, wasps, hornets. Complaining is welcomed in this thread right? I'm going to feel pretty good about mail ordering the majority of my plants for fall.

The prices for the Convention plants has not been set yet. But I'm sure it will be reasonable and not outlandish. As soon as I hear the price for sure, I'll post it here. Answers to other questions I saw on this thread: Â You can attend the vending, hosta show and auction without registering. Â You don't have to be member of a hosta society (or the AHS) to register and attend the convention. We want first timers! But be warned, that's how we catch you! LOL! I found out the other day, that Nick Carter, the current President of the Indianapolis Hosta Society, came to the 1997 Convention in Indy as a visitor, immediately joined the organization and now look at him. Â Registration for Indy will be limited and yes, most conventions have had to turn away the latecomers. This is because there is usually only a limited number that can be seated in the banquet rooms and on the buses - which have to be pre-reserved for the tours. Â The early registration deadline is fast approaching. Get it postmarked by April 30th to save yourself money. Two months, one week and counting! 8-) Shadz (one of the Indy team)

Will, I saw your (Bob's Gelbbunt Seedling) last Winter, it has been growing big since.

You purchased some very nice conifers from the Dragonfly Farms.
Please chance the Cupressus glabra 'Sulphera'
Into
Cupressus glabra 'Sulphurea'.
You see how fast wrong spelled names will spread as Garen59 copied it also this way...

Thank you Fiddlelgal and Garen, I appreciate that you appreciate it. :)

GH, It's one of several that Bob is growing. He is basically observing them to see if any are better/reliable enough to be released. All are a little different and perhaps not consistently reliable. The one I have is basically unique and if it looks good in a year or two perhaps we'll do some grafts and see how they turn out. :)

Great conifers shown. I'm sure those with shade appreciate seeing any mentioned that do well in it also. Love the Acer also.
