I didn't get anything done. We had a very cool and rainy weekend. We ended up with 2 inches of much needed moisture so I am not complaining.

You are moving right along, memo. I have an old shrub rose that weeds have grown right up thru, what a nightmare to get those out.

I didn't do anything yesterday either, but today I plan to attack the huge mustard garlic patch that appeared this Spring behind the brush pile under the chestnut tree. I was shocked to see it! Hope I haven't waited too long, as I see it's white bloom already; but on a wet day like today I thought it would be much easier to pull it out by the roots. Thank goodness it isn't that tall - yet.

Friday I spent the day hunting plants with minimal success. All the nurseries around here seem to stock the same old same old and many want a fortune for very ordinary plants.

Saturday I was hoping to get my few purchases planted before the rain, but ran out of Leaf-Gro and didn't feel like dealing with the crowds at HD. Then my neighbor invited me to go with her and her mother to the grower where she purchases most of her annuals, but again, same old same old, so very disappointing.

Sunday was dreary with rain off and on and DH and I had some errands that need to be taken care of, so again nothing got done. I guess once the weather clears up at the end of the week I'm going to be busy.

Totally Confused

I usually just lurk and love to read the info and see the pics of all the gardens, but I do want to jump in now and say to 'totally confused' that the reason wintersowing makes me so happy--well one of the reasons--is that I can grow plants that no one offers for sale in our area. Seeds are easily obtained through trading or SASBEs, so very inexpensive. I get to grow plants that are not seen in everyone else's garden, and I like that! :)

I order from a lot of on-line sellers for the same reason. I don''t want just the same dozenor two plants that are available everywhere.

I transplanted a whole bunch of daffodils and solidified my list of plants I want to purchase for my front shade garden. I also tried, unsuccessfully, to kill some yucca. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it! Yucca are the scourge of the Earth and I am convinced that aliens planted them here as sleeper cells for an eventual takeover of the world.

Glenda, Yes. It does feel good to accomplish some things that need doing but my body is not appreciating it much. ;) We got about an inch and a half of rain over the weekend. Much needed here too. It was decent on Sunday until the late afternoon, then a few more sprinkles. Today the sun is shining but it's pretty windy. Only up to 48F. today. Summer WILL get here and then we won't feel like going outside! Isn't that the way it always goes?!!

Schoolhouse, I do not envy you that job! That is horrible stuff to have to get rid of. I spent six years at the ranch trying to eradicate it and many others that were just as ugly. The Rancher has a nice lawn now but needs to get out there and do some work on it. I noticed yesterday he has lots of Musk thistles working their way in. I dug several out while I was there. Sigh.

Totally Confused, Do not become discouraged. Pretty plants will come your way when you least expect it. Growers are starting to catch on that not everyone wants landscape plants and I think selections are getting better all the time. It's early season so bedding plants will be the big item right now. Give it a few weeks and I'll bet the perennials will start becoming available. Growers have to clear some way in their greenhouses before they will have room to start digging and potting perennials. Until then online nurseries are learning faster than locals so more unusual plants are available there. Most that I have ordered have come well packed and healthy.

I set out seedlings in the vegetable garden. It was cool and cloudy and we got a little shower, but it was not enough to dampen my planned projects. (We were supposed to have clear skies and temps in the mid-70s. Surprise! Felt like late March. But the sun came out from time to time. I cleaned out grass (Bermuda) from around flowers and cut back over-zealous daylilies that hung over a rose bush; hauled wheelbarrows full of wood chips and mulched several places, Chased a crabby 3 ft large snake with my rifle in hand, but he eluded me, twice; we both mowed and used the grass trimmer in different areas; cut lower limbs off some of the cedars; found several more Morel mushrooms (HUGE ones!); watered; pulled weeds; trimmed back the Bridle's wreath hedges; tilled up a large space for more veggies over by the Champagne grapes and dug out Bermuda that stubbornly insists on growing there; took pictures of my irises (oh, so lovely this year); pulled weeds out of the iris bed along the back edge of the back yard; We had a band gig on Saturday night, had a blast, but worn slap out! We got home around 3 a.m. Got booked for a two-day Biker's Rally in two weeks. We're talking long hair, beards, Harley Hogs & BMWs, lot of Leather and Doo-Rags! That should be a real trip! Yippee!
Next day, we worked outside most of the day. took the "Boys" for their morning walk in the meadow and inspected the wildflowers to see what was going to bloom and if the seeds I sowed had sprouted-and they have; and cleaned up after the chicks about ten times...sat out on the patio with DH and talked about things...he is nearly done with the clearing and fencing around our 3 acres and said (to my shock and delight) that he was going to turn the middle bedroom into a large bath and move the laundry up out of the basement (for me) and it will go in there. The old bath space will be our new walk-in closet and hall closet for towels and linens. Can it be true???? We finished up the mowing and trimming. Got cleaned up and went to WalMart in the evening, got three new movies and went to Mazzio's for pizza and salad! Man!
We had a very FULL weekend!

Gee! When you write it all down, you really feel like you've gotten a lot done!!! Makes me feel better already.

Geez! Annie, Waht a time you had! I would be turning handsprings over getting a new bath> Congratulations to you. It sounds like everyone is having a great time at your house.

Memo, you have to feel as if a weight is lifted to have that bush dug up. Clearing out a "good" grower is always a huge job...

My weekends are still spent working: the price to (normally) be off the other five days. I worked 8 12s out of 11 that last group, and have four coming up this week, but the increased workload is temporary.

We had terrible weather Saturday anyways, so I couldn't have worked but we needed the rains.

I am enjoying the iris flowers now, and the daylilys are coming along.

Oh, Annie, you have to feel such a relief to have gotten so much done. I can't believe that at the end of a day so filled with hard work that you were still able to attend the band bash! Wow! I wish I could do it all that way. I'm so glad you had a good time.

The bike thing will be fabulous!!! We ride big Honda Gold Wings but still join in on the country poker runs in summer ;)

So exciting about the new bath/laundry room. Maybe you can get a big whirlpool bathtub for it. That would surely make your aching bones feel better that the end of a hard day. I'd give my eye teeth for one! Your DH is a special one, he is.

Saturday was gorgeous here and dh and i worked in the gardens for about 5 hours.I started while he was taking a nap and when he woke up,he came out and joined me.We got a lot of weeding,and some transplanting done.I also planted some poppy seeds,probably the wrong time to do that,but i try anyway.I was looking for something in my cabinet when i came across them,and since i'm one of those gardeners that doesn't follow all the rules i planted them.

Totally confused, i plant a lot from seed,like you i'm tired of marigolds,petunias etc,sure i like them,but there is more out there,and i'll try anything once.

Have you ever planted schizianthus,clarkia,moneywort.They are all beautiful.Schizianthus is very full of flowers and is great in hanging pots,and the seeds i planted had several different colors on them,lavendars,purple,pink,white.Moneywort is a big beautiful purple flower,and clarkias are tall and multicolored all up and down the stem.

I like ordering online, too. It's more fun to research stuff and then get the exact type of plant I want... within reason. My local nursery is fun to shop at, too, because they're very knowledgeable about what does well around here.

This weekend I just did some weeding and pinching some buds off some new roses.

Though I did go to visit Huntington Gardens to get some inspiration...
and obsessed about some roses I wanted to buy.

Everyone is getting lots and lots done. This is such a busy time out in the garden but I just love spring. I mainly have still been working on getting my new daylilies planted. I do make progress but more come in the mail and then I am behind again. I don't know why I ordered so many LOL!

Oraganic Kitten, you are so industrious...putting cash in your pocket while it rains so you can put flowers in your garden while the sun shines! You're doing a good job of both, your garden is stunning!

Kathi, Is there a right and wrong time to plant poppy seeds in So Cal? I don't think it will matter. They'll sprout and if the timing isn't right they'll wait and grow and bloom when it is the right time. I'm betting you'll have beautiful poppies all summer long.

NYRita, Where are you putting all these wonderful new plants? I thought I had read a post from you that your gardens were full beyond full? Is your lawn getting smaller? It's funny how we can always find room for one more or thirty more things isn't it?!!

Just checked in here tonight. We didn't get anything done over the weekend. Were gone for the entire weekend as one of the grandsons had 1st communion, which of course Papa and Nana couldn't miss. But have been trying to get some done each evening after work. Last night I trimmed and mowed the lawn.

Tonight a little hand watering from the rain barrel and then moved all potted plants into the garage as we are under a frost advisory for tonight. Sure hope they are wrong.

Memo, it sure sounds like you have your new yard well under control and well on the way to looking beautiful this summer! Seems like everyone is getting a lot done. Can't wait for summer to arrive and all the flowers that come with it!

Lawn, what lawn? My gardens are full. But somhow I just manage to make new beds or enlarge exhisting ones.
